It's getting into the back country, seeing things you don't get to see often.
Finding old ruins, foundations and forgotten roads that haven't seen anyone in decades.
It's quiet time.

Those 2 are 99% perfect in my eyes only lacking one thing (in regards to me), progression. Can be anything from climbing a trail I had walked to cleaning a dh section to gain a ft on a drop etc...its all about small measurements of progression (even mental blocks)

I love to be in the woods and the mountains and hiking/backpacking is just too slow for me now. Mountain biking is a nice adjunct to road biking and vice versa. It also is a fun way to stay fit and keep ones reflexes from deminishing due to aging. It's a neat way to do some friendly competition with the "kids" who are in their 40's. Then too, the occasional club rides are a blast.
