In 2013 Trek did not include the 4500 in the catalog and it can not be found in Bikepedia so it must be assumed you are referring to 2012. Regardless, the 4500 is a 26er and the Wahoo is a 29er. IMHO your first decision is, what wheel size do you want. Even though the components on the 4500 are slightly better than the Wahoo, its not enough to buy it over the Wahoo if you want a 29er. SOOOoooo, the first question you have to answer is do you want a 29er or a 26er, and the rest will fall into place.

wheel size isnt much of a problem...im just getting into biking,,,
i have the option of a 2013 wahoo for 569$
or a 10' Trek 4500 for 289$
the wahoo is a 29er
& the 10' 4500 is a 26er...
my main focus would be street riding and some trail riding (single track trail) to begin with...
and money, i do have to buy either bike....

The 4500 has nicer brakes and a marginally better drivetrain. Both those differences pale in comparison to the big difference between the two bikes though...which is wheel size (which also changes the geometry). Go out and test both bikes and see how they feel, then report back. Until you ride both bikes, put the decision on the back burner because you won't be able to make an informed decision until you've been on both.

Being that your a 1st time rider I would take the above advice and try them both out. One issue that may arise is whether they fit you or not. I'm assuming the trek 4500 comes in only one size because its a 2010. That being said I owned a 4500 and think it would be a great starter bike for you if it fits well.
