MTB confusion....Is my bike worthy

After fixing up and riding my old school steel bike I am pondering what gives with my Gary fisher HT with LX 9 speed. The dam thing is very heavy seemingly very slow. It is not new a 2007 Tassarra not a bad bike. The wheels are not good and I am sure the cassette is cast iron...Is the old girl worthy of updating the wheelset there is no way she is a junker It's a Gary Fisher after all. The old steel bike is lighter and climbs great.
