Choosing an new crankset for my Rockhopper

I've got a 2010 Specialized Rockhopper Comp Disc, currently with the stock Suntour XCR crankset on it. To put it mildly, this crankset has been beaten to a pulp - the two inner sprockets are decently bent, and there's more than one broken tooth. I'm looking to replace it.

The more I read up on replacing cranksets though, the less I seem to know. What I do know is:
> I would have no problem if the gear ratio shifted up (so that everything is slightly harder, yes) or stayed the same, but I don't want it to move down. It's currently a 22/32/42 set.
> I have no problem replacing the bottom bracket if that's necessary to use my preferred crankset.
> I might want longer cranks (I'm going to guess they're 175mm) as I have biggish legs and prefer larger power strokes in general
> I'd like to keep the price under $200 for the crankset (not including a bottom bracket if I need it), seeing as I'm a broke-ass college student and everything.
> Weight's not an issue for me, I intend to ride this enough in the coming months/years to burn several pounds off - and I'd rather do that than pay more for a lighter set.
> As I currently have a triple set, I'd like to keep it a triple and not replace derailleurs or shifters or my (brand new) cassette.

Any help?

That would certainly fit the budget, but I'm a little concerned about the 44T ring. I feel like this might be a bit awkward without increasing the size of the second ring as well. Is this concern valid, or am I worrying over nothing?

Would it be worth it to build a crankset from bare cranks and rings?

I use a raceface ride xc crankset. It comes with an external bb and comparable price to the deore (perhaps less). They also make a ride allmountain if you require a lil more beef.
They come in triple, double w bash and single w bash. Mine is a 32/22 w bash

You are worried over nothing; the STANDARD for MTB cranksets is 44/32/22, entry-level bikes get the 42. Unless you're doing something REALLY unique, putting your own together is a waste of time.

Try this:

Cheap and reliable.

Point taken, I'll probably get the Deore. Definitely within my price range.
Is there any difference between the M590 and the M591 that I see some places? I would be getting the 175mm 22/32/44 size.

What tools would I need to install this myself? While I could take it to my LBS, I love doing work like this myself.

I just replaced the crankset on my Trek with a Shimano Alivio crank for super cheap, $40 but it didn't come with a new BB like the Deore M590 previously suggested.

The crank arms will likely be bolted to the BB spindle by either a 8mm Allen head bolt or a 14 or 15mm hex head bolt. You'll then need a crank puller like the Park CWP-7 to pull the crank off the BB and a bottom bracket tool if you're going to replace that as well. There are several different tools for bottom brackets, so have a look at yours and determine which tool fits your BB.

ALSO, this was something that I nearly screwed up on. Make sure that the new BB spindle length matches your current spindle length (I believe that's also referred to as BB width). It probably will be very close if not the same, but changing the spindle length moves the crankset off-center from the cassette, so it's definitely something to be aware of.

I ordered that crankset without even checking the recommended BB spindle length on it but was lucky to find according to this document that the recommended spindle length matched what my bike already had. I couldn't find the M590 or M591 on it, so there must be an updated document like it available somewhere with that crankset listed.

This, and a metric Allen set. Grease (or teflon tape) for the threads. Read and follow the directions that come with it, or check the Park Tool website for how-to videos.
