looking for a first mtb.

I pretty much am down to 2 bikes. Trek markin 29er hardtail or Trek x-caliber 5. Mainly for basic trails occassional rides on the road to the store and a speedy bike just for fun. My budget is under $600

I don't see the Marlin on the Trek website anymore...that a 2012? The 2012 Marlin and 2013 X-Caliber 5 are pretty much the same bike. It's possible they tweaked the geometry slightly, but I doubt that it's by much (if at all). Ride them both just in case one rides better than the other due to any slight geometry changes, and play with the shifters to see if there's one of you like better (since one is SRAM and one is Shimano, and really, that's the biggest difference between the two). And then, well, assuming you don't notice any differences...pick the one whose color you like better.

What Zeph said, especially about the color scheme. To make it a tad faster, pick up some Kenda Kross tires for if you are riding in town quite a bit. It has a good center line to keept he rolling resistance down and still has side knobs if you hit some dirt.
