Question about fitting to a rack
 

Hi all, new here. I am having a really hard time with this, as I am not a cycler, but am looking for my boss, who is.
Please excuse my complete lack of information!
My question basically boils down to this: can qr skewers be used to lock to a bike rack as well?
Back story:
My employer bought a 2011 gt force 1.0 bike. He didn't have a roof rack, so he bought a whispbar ( I want to say the aero style), and a Yakima forklift carrier. Unfortunately the skewer that slides through the forks to lock to the rack wasn't long enough. The largest Yakima carries is 8 inches long, the sprocket rocket one. I returned the rack for him when Yakima said they didn't have anything longer. I need to purchase a new rack to fit his existing crossbars, but the reason it didn't fit to begin with is that his fork ends are like an inch each. Pretty sure that's bigger than normal. Everything about the Yakima rack was fine, except the threads just wouldn't thread for the skewer.
So I was looking into skewers online, and there are TONS, but I don't know if I could use those for this purpose.
I hope this all makes sense. If not that, hopefully someone has some other ideas.

I've tried to convince him to get the sidearm, but he is deadset on a forklift. Also, he has a thru axle, I believe it's 15mm.

All you need is a Fork Ups or Rocky Mounts Drive-Shaft thru-axle adapter for the standard QR-clamp rack like the Yakima (however, I like the Rocky Mounts heads/rails MUCH more).

that's perfect. I had looked into the forkups one but I hadn't been sure about locking. I really like the rocky mounts one, and I think he will as well. I'll forward that over and update. Thanks for your help!!

wait one more question. The adapter has u shaped ends. I see you slide it down onto the skewer then lock it, but do you think that would be secure? I've never seen one work in person, but it seems you could just pull up on it, right?

Fork Ups clamps in pretty tightly. I used one on my downhill bike and never worried about security. It would take a big wrecking bar or superhuman reefing on the handlebars while standing on the roof to budge it.

I have a Forklift and a thru-axle bike. I use a Thule 15mm thru-axle adaptor that clamps and locks onto the Yakima Forklift--Yakima's adapter is the same but painted black and costs more $ (made by same third party--maybe by Fork Up--or theirs is by the same 3rd party). You need to have a Yakima SKS lock inserted in the Forklift clamp lever or someone will steal the adaptor or worse, the bike. Speaking of which, the lock only locks the adaptor, thru-axle bikes can be stolen by unscrewing the 15mm axle--unless the Rocky Mount clamps the axle ultra hard, the axle could be removed like the Thule/Yak/Fork Up one (i'm not familiar with how RM works in person). You'll need to use a coated cable or a chain with lock going thru the bike frame and under the factory roof rails for extra security. Don't just put it under the factory crossbars as they can be undone if they're adjustable ones. I hope this helps.
