How Do You Stay in Shape in the Winter?
I've been cycling less and I added running to my routine. It's not as fun as cycling, but it's much more tolerable to run outside in the cold Ohio winters than to have the wind chill that comes with biking. I just wrote a blog post about it and it got me thinking… What is everyone else who has to deal with cold weather doing to stay in shape this winter? Riding outside? Fat tire bike? Trainer in the basement? Running? Skiing? Speed skating? If you've hung up your bike do you miss the trails?

Ride your bike. For example, I have my "Abominable Snowbike" for snowy times.

Byyyyyyyyy...!
Mountain biking!
Just did a 2.5 hour ride through the snow (three inches probably). Boy that was tough. Theres just no rolling through that stuff.
Also skiing. Xc skiing is awesome but targets a different set of muscles than cycling (not necessarily a bad thing)

I run 3.5-5 miles every weekday I can at lunchtime. If the weather drops into the teens and there's any wind chill on top of that, I head inside and do the spinning bike for 45+ minutes. If it's just snow and/or the temps are double digits, I put on my YakTrax and run anyway. Plus group trainer rides once or twice a week in the evenings at the LBS. Plus, wife and I have spinning bikes at home and we try to keep up a routine of once or twice a week together on those.
And they say downhillers don't know how to pedal. Pffft.

Run. Bike trainer. Weight lift. And I snowboard too, but while I can argue you can get a workout out of it, I don't really do that to stay in shape.

I still ride as much as I can (of course it's 61 and sunny right now outside). One of the reasons I got back into mountain biking after quite a few years off is I was road biking but couldn't do that in the rain (and feel safe) so I got something that was fun to ride in the mud.
Otherwise, I step up the leg weight lifting in the winter. I used my legs so much in the summer riding it's hard to fit as much weights as I want into the schedule. I use the winter to try to even out the massive amounts of cardio with some high weight, low rep stuff in the winter. Not sure if that's "correct" procedure, but it's my process...

Suck it up and go bike! If you can dress for the cold, you can go ride in the cold.

Riding in mud is discouraged on our local trails. When it rains I am forced out onto the road. I don't mind it too much. The big thing I hate is riding when it's cold and raining at the same time.

Still kicking.
Trainer, on days below 30 until new gloves arrive which will then go to under 20 unless it's snowing. 30 on up, road ride.

Same winter routines here, except I hit local trails on cross country skis when the snow is too deep to ride them. Winter is my big running season as cycling takes up most of my exercise at other times of year.

Weight lifting, running, trainer, but mostly skiing! When the weather isn't too terribly wet, I ride outside.
I swim occasionally.

Riding the MTB is one way I work at staying in shape in the winter, that and the trainer/spinning. I hang up the MTB and ride road bikes all the rest of the year.

Ride my bike. Think studded tire, wool and fleece. Thermos of something warm in the camelbak too.

We've been pretty lucky this year, but generally we keep our teeth sharp in the Sandia Foothills. With the exception of rare days when it's too wet from snow melt, the south facing stuff is pretty much rideable year round.
