If I buy a bike on CL and I have the original sales receipt, would I be able to use the manufacturer frame warranty? The reason I ask is that I am looking at a DB recoil on CL. It is a '13 which is virtually new. The seller received it as a gift and already has a mtb.

My thought is that it might be worth buying if the price is right, assuming I could get some warranty coverage. I have done some research on this bike and it seems that frame damage is a bit of a concern. I am about 220 lbs so there is a fair chance I might do such damage. I might be able to get it in an even trade for my roadie which has mostly sat unused since I got bit by the mtb bug. So, I would be getting it pretty much free, allowing me to put some $$$ into a good fork/other bits.

I realize that this is an older single pivot heavy design. I am not a racer, so this doesn't bother me much.

I swear, what is it about bicycles - - over almost any other consumer product - - that makes people think that there should be some sort of warranty for something purchased used in a private-party transaction?

Frame warranties extend only to the original purchaser with valid proof of purchase. In rare instances, a shop that is a dealer for the brand and that you have a very tight, personal relationship with MAY be real nice and turn in a nearly-new broken frame for you under warranty but nobody should realistically expect it.
