Im sick of Lance. I bet im not the only one. All the roadies are getting all excited for summer and how how they get to play dress up and pretend they are cool. Its not that I hate road bikes, I loved test riding customer bikes after repairs and they haul ass. But I really just dont like the attitude of many of the roadies. A lot of them that ive come accross come off like experts at everything, most dont know anything about bikes or riding but they always want their bikes perfect in every way, and can be very pesuasive about being a dick and having it their way.
Last year for the Tour De France it was on the t.v.'s at my shop all week for the customers to watch and cheer for their hero. We all had bets going and I bet agaisnt him. I was being a dick too because I was talking alot of smack about how I wish that he will lose. Sadly he won. Roadies need to get a life thats not so gay. I hope I dont piss too many people off. This is just how I feel....

'Some' roadies are definately off in their own elite world. Thats just fact, but I know enough mountain bikers to know some of them are too. Every sport has elitists. In football they were the quarterbacks and linebackers, in tennis it was the americans and germans, in basketball the point gaurds...fact of life really. There will always be people who think they are cool by just being....them in the position they think is most important.

Once you learn to suck it up and ignore them the less pissed you will be. And really, wanting your bike perfect isn't a crime, but I do understand your point

Yes mountain bikers can be just as bad sometimes. The only reason I dont like roadies is because it sucks to have to work with them as customers. And they do have some attitude when you see them on a trail or something.

At least they usualy always have awesome sun glasses

I ride both, however, I consider myself a mountain biker first and a roadie....last!

I've noticed the different attitudes, so have many of my friends. When I ride the road, other riders barely acknowledge your existence. You might get a quick wave. If they come up behind you, they're trying to blow past you to embarrass you. I you pass them, they jump out of the saddle and grab your wheel. It's a HUGE ego trip.

I love blazing up on my CX (cyclocross) bike to a group, catch them, pull for a bit, then motion I'm turning off and hit a dirt path while they look and wonder what just happened.

When I got mountain biking, I pull up to the parking area, everyone is hanging out talking, chilling, riding other peoples bikes. As I unload, several people ride by, say "hello" and stuff like, "Nice bike"...etc. It's a much more relaxed casual atmosphere. When I see people off the trail with a flat or other repair there are usually 2 or 3 people offering to help.

I don't think riding one form or another makes you that specific type, I think the type of person you are, will dictate what type or riding you prefer.

Don't get me started with Triathletes (or TRY athletes) as I like to call them.

They are the most crybaby, winey, arrogant cyclists that exist.

Of course not all roadies and Tryathletes are jerks, but as a whole, YES THEY ARE!

Seems to me that you are mad at all roadies, so why take your anger out on Lance? You gave your reasons for hating roadies, but really didn't explain your hate for Armstrong.

I'm both. Sometimes my mechanic is a d*ck 'cause he wants everything his own way. Geesh!

*Eric, I'm just joking man. I really love ya and all you do for my rides. I'm just making fun of the trolls whining. I'll bring ya some pizza tomorrow*

I especially like the fat old guys riding in the bunch who have never ridden faster than 20mph except going downhill who like to dish out advice on what is and isnt appropriate in the bunch - and then at the next corner proceed to shove you in the gutter. Stupid fat old losers, should be playing golf or sailing yachts or something where their pathetic attitude is more at home

Roadies try to pass and drop you because what roadies do. I'm a roadie oftentimes. What else are we going to do? Huck a loading dock? Ride a skinny in the woods? If your going my speed I'll chat sometimes, but road bikes' only real purpose is to go far, fast. And that’s what we do, sometimes to the exclusion of more sociable activities.

As for wanting things perfect, road bikes are just less fault-tolerant than freeride rigs. If something screws up, we are far from home in shoes we cant walk in. If something is out of whack with riding position we get to try to bend our spinal cord in unpleasant directions for four hours to finish the ride. If something breaks, we hot the pavement at 25 miles and hour. Not to mention that we have cars taking a run at us every thirty seconds. Man, it’s a wonder sometimes we are as nice as we are...
But hey, if you wave, I will wave back. Then I will probably try and drop you.

The funny thing is that when I'm on my road bike, I change and get all "I'm gonna catch that guy in front of me" and crap.

I still wave at everyone, and will yell at you if you don't wave back!

You cant really hate on him for what he does, especially the cancer stuff. You are all gonna hate me but when those wrist bands came out over the summer thats when i thought of my name:
liv_rong............LiveStrong, i took away the e,s and t and thats what i got.
Lance may be cool,I dont know cause I never met him, but roadies suck.

Man there is a HELL of a lot of truth in these words.

I am a roadie first now but it used to be the other way around. To the comment about getting a flat on the trail I must say that right after I got back into road riding I got a flat out in the middle of no where. When I was out on this ride I had been blown away by 2 racer types (at different times) that didn't say a word other than on your left as they flew by but BOTH of these guys stopped (again at different times , and on their return loop) to make sure I was ok and had everything I needed to fix the flat.

A lot of roadies come off as a-holes but deep down we aren't all THAT bad. I know I would help anyone in need be it on the road or on the trail and I even wave.

Not to stereotype or anything, but to get into road biking, it requires a lot more then to get into mountain biking. Sure they've got bikes that match up dollar for dollar, but our $350 Hardrock is their $600 Specialized Allez. And that's just entry level. So maybe the reason you feel this way is because it's sort of true, road bikers tend to be slightly older, and slightly richer.

Of course I've never really encountered anyone too stuck up. Probably because my whole town is!

Have you ever wondered why?

I mean their entry level bike with components on a similar level to ours sells for $600.00.

Yet, mountain bikes have a suspension fork?

Frame design is similar.
Wheel design is similar.
Shifters are similar, o.k. their integrated are a bit more complex.
Seats are the same.
Seat posts, same.
...etc.

Why do they cost almost twice as much?

Maybe because that's what the market will bear. Not like some of us think and it's due to how much it cost to make them.

It's a conspiracy I tell you. Just another example of how "The MAN" is keeping us down!

I have to admit, I am very out of it on this topic. My interaction with roadies is limited to mountain bikers in training. I have never met an actual roadie.

I think you've hit the nail on the head right there. Serious roadies tend to spend a lot of time preening themselves and ensuring that their bikes are sparkling clean and running at their optimum before they'll step foot on a pedal. Also, as swiff pointed out, road bikes tend to be quite a bit more expensive than their mountain biking counterparts.

Roadies are generally far more competitive than their MTB'ing counterparts since, most of them, ride in large groups and are constantly trying not to get dropped by their makeshift peletons. This causes them to ride around with a chip on their shoulders at all times.

MTBers, on the other hand, tend to go out either solo or in groups of five or less and, most times, members of the group know eachother fairly well so each knows what the ride pecking order is which means there's likely to be less of that animal competitiveness that's present in the wannabe peletons.

Don't get me wrong, I love riding my road bike and, when I'm on it, I do everything I can to pass riders that I see ahead of me or stick with riders who might pass me but I'm always friendly about it. I also never ride with the silly clubs; something about 15 to 30 sweaty men in lycra hanging out at a Starbucks after a ride just strikes me as weirs somehow.

I don't mind roadies; if there is a road section between trails I will ride with their pack. (where I am, there is tons of them) But I'm always at the back of the pack because I have my chunky off-road tires.
