Beautiful bike. From the early 80s, though. No such thing as production MTBs or ATBs in the 70s, AFAIK.
EDIT: Which you should know because your picture is actually taken from the MOMBAT and is labelled as a 1983 Univega.

1983 Takara Highlander. The wheels and tires are from a 1995 Trek 820. I stripped the original Takagi crankset down to just the middle chainring and used a spacer kit to make the rear wheel single cog. I took off the cantilevers and installed a V-brake on the front. I also have the original 4" of adjustment seatpost but replaced it with a new one before I took this photo. This beast, as a singlespeed, is all I'm going to ride this winter. My ride is flat but windy and I weigh 400 lbs so I'm running it with 38x18 gearing (55 gear inches). I also got rid of the dorky stem mounted reflector. I'll note that this is a pavement only bike.

1985 Specialized Rockhopper. My Urban Assault Vehicle (UAV) 'Rover'. All original components with add-on of Nitto front rack (usually has Weld basket attached), Bontrager fenders, and Schwalbe Big Apple tires. Rear Blackburn rack came with the bike in 1985, when I bought it. Usually has grocery panniers on it, too. I have newer bikes, and fancier bikes, but this is my go-to-daily-rider.

Finished the Sakae Litage frame show'n back in this thread. I had to hand make the dropouts and cable guides under the BB but was side tracked with another job in between so took a while to finish.
Built with Sram X9 custom built wheels and Onza brakes. I found a barely used Manitou fork cheap, after a clean and re grease has a nice action for a old fork.
I have loads of detailed photos if anyone wants to see something in particular.

this is my '93? GT Talera. got it to be my winter commuter tank back in 2009. turned out to be just that (a tank) and I was better off with my roadified hybrid w 700c studded rd tires for winter commuting. wound up swapping the killer 26" studded tires for awesome BMX style Maxxis Holy Rollers for summer duty on camping trips. hasn't seen any action since I broke the OEM chain showing off for my kids. that was funny. can't part with it and I really need to do some more summer dirt roads with it. maybe next summer

The one real advantage that the GT 'Triple Triangle' frame has is the ability to easily mount things on the back of the seat tube. I loved my Karakoram for that (until it broke).

I've posted my old yo eddy before but since then I've picked up an 85 Ritchey ascent, 87 Ritchey outback, built up my mid 90's jamis dragon, and finally made plans to build up my no name elevated chainstay mtb.

Just an update. My winter project for the upgraded Trek 820 is to build a new set of wheels, Sun Rhyno Lites 36h laced to XT hubs. The entry level factory wheels will be going to my grandson's first MTB, a Trek 800 of about the same vintage as mine.

Not vintage, but I just got a 2014 Kona Unit, and am in totally love with the bike and the concept. Haven't touched my geared w/front suspension Al hardtail since I got it.

I have two vintage mtbs I ride regularly; one for gravel riding (a '91 team stumpjumper) and another for commuting/touring ('88 stumpjumper comp):

Mostly modern parts:
- Rhyno Lite wheels with XT hubs,
- Kenda Excavator Pro 1.95 folding for the rear
- 1x10 drivetrain with RF single narrow wide 30t & XT cassette with OneUp 16/42 upgrade for 11-42t,
- XTR shifter, XT M780 crank / BB70 / Paul chain Keeper,
- KMC X 10.93 chain,
- Cane Creek S2 headset,
- Titec titanium flat bar with Titec Big Al stem,
- BR-M730 Cantilever brakes for the back,
- either a Deore or XT front hydraulic disc brake (haven't decided whether I want to break apart a brand new set of XT's),
- SLX M675 rear mid cage derrailuer,
- Kalloy 27.2mm carbon seatpost with 27.2 - 29.8mm shim, and
- XT SPD pedals.
Need some advice here. I got a Nashbar Carbon MTB fork which came in yesterday. I think it has some kind of defect on the left leg. See pics:
Left fork leg
Right fork leg (perfect)
Looks pretty bad to me. I've emailed Nashbar with the pics. We'll see what they say.
In the meanwhile, I've been toying around with making a 96er sometime down the road (maybe out my trusty Iron Horse aluminum hardtail). I got an Abaxo rigid straight carbon 29er/465mm A-C fork and that one arrived in perfect condition. I got a 29 wheel and tubes, but don't yet have a tire.
Just for fun, I put a 26" front wheel on the Abaxo fork and measured the head angle with a 1.95 tire and got 70 degrees. That isn't bad, as I recall, this size frame (16") has a 70.5 deg HA listed. A 26x2.35 tire would fit the fork for sure (for more squish). I can probably go as wide as a 3 (that is, if I want to spend $100 on a single tire).
I mocked it up with the Abaxo with the 26 wheel and this is what it looked like:
Decisions...

SLX M675 rear mid cage derrailuer ????
Okay, I'm missing something here. Surely you don't have a 42t cassette? And surely you aren't pairing it with a mid-cage derailleur? Because this represents a lot of front derailleur hate! Even a 22/32 crank with outer rock ring and 11/34 cassette would give you a wider gear range without extreme parts. Or am I just taking the fun out?
