Have you replaced the cables? what condition is the cassette/chain in. Changing any of what you have suggested won't give a significant improve shifting is the basics aren't working correctly.

This ^^

Start with the cables and housings. Make sure the cable has no bends and slides smoothly through the tubes. Then check the derailleur hanger, make sure that's straight. Then check/replace the cassette/chain. Then check for play in the derailleur links by grabbing the lowest point on the cage and wiggling side-to-side.

You won't be able to change the cogset without a rear wheel upgrade, as the stocker is an old-style freewheel setup rather than freehub/cassette. Almost any newer SRAM or Shimano shifter/derailleur combo would be an improvement over the stock no-name twist shifters and whatever derailleur it has now. Just don't sink a lot of money into it - - as it will still be a Mongoose MGX D50i. Not saying that to be derogatory, just the voice of experience having owned one.

oh she shifts like a champ, i got in a accident today and it broke my front derailer shifter, so im just in 3rd gear and 8th gear. dag nam non driving university of wa drivers. my cable is ate up in side of my shifter now though. other then that no complaints.

my issues in for me maybe . just my front crank.

i got a old skool crank i pulled from a schwinn late 70s- 80s tour bike i recently decommissioned.

it has changeable ring set. my issue.....is how do i do the math conversion since its a larger 2 ring crank then my small crank
