Checking a good deal or no? Diamondback Adult Response XE 2014 Mtb $299.
So this is on sale right now at Dicks Sporting, for $299 and a friend is considering it for his wife. Looks like a fine starter as far as I know, for the price, and if she rides it a lot may just replace it next year. I don't expect it to be perfectly assembled or tuned, but I can help with that.
Is there better deals - better new bikes in the same range?

If you can work on a bike for them, you may find a better deal on a slightly used bike for her on craigslist. For the same money, a couple year old bike with better components would be a better deal. Then just give it a once over and she'll be ready to roll.
If she's dead set on new, that one is ok...nothing special, will handle easy to moderate trails.

Ok thanks. He might pick up a bike this weekend. Decided a shiny new one would be the best surprise for his wife. I'll know Monday at work if he bought it or not.
