Best laid plans of mice and men - For the first time since May, I loaded my bike on the car to drive to a bike ride (I always ride out of my house). But today, I wanted to get some single-track riding at Theo (13 miles from my house) and didn't have a lot of time. So I park and ride the 1/2 mile to the trailhead and stop to drop the pressure in my tires for the fresh snow. I go to open the presta valve and the core come off and shoots into the 8 inches of fresh snow. I have a spare tube but since I drove, I didn't bring a pump Walk of shame back to the car.

Might try again tomorrow, granted the service tech working on my oven shows up at a reasonable time.

Take away: ALWAYS bring the damn pump!

I can't believe I'm stil not getting full use of my Minnesota. I'm one pair of studded tires and one pair of cold boots away. If I don't do it this coming winter, I might as well put it up for adoption.

I'm Here for you intransit! My home is a good home for wayward bikes!

I took the fat plunge on Valentine's day. Went to a swap meet in Westminster Md. Got a good deal on a new origin8 Amarok.($650). Snowed the next day and I got my first snow ride.
I really like this thing. It is a smile inducing machine. Am making a few changes in the gearing and he group. It is an entry level fatty but I think I will enjoy it.
Did clip a small tree with a pedal and sprain the shoulder and hand. Still rode another 2 hours before going to ER. I am used to my F29 al1 and this is much wider. I guess I need to pay little more attention to spacing! LOL! My lefty is like a Doby, Always pissed and ready to kick butt! This thing is like a Lab, Duh, Let's d something HUH, HUH. I was laughing almost the whole time. This thing is so ridiculous with it's 4.9 tires that it is fun!



So far am glad I bought it. Having fun outfitting it now.

Here is the finished product



The drop-bar beast!

Gevenalle GX shifters and Salsa Woodchipper bars. I really love the finished product! Two things I think I need to do, but I will get more miles before and I must ride some single-tracks before final adjustments:

Shorter stem and/or move the brake hoods higher on the bars. I will also be shopping drop-bar pogies before next winter.



The ugly duckling turned into a beautiful swan....



Actually, these two were swimming at the location I planned to take the photos of the bike. I took a couple pictures of these beauties and moved to a new local for bike pics.

you might have to modify off the shelf pogies. I have a set of the Microshift/Nashbar shifters on my Soma Double Cross and regular pogies do not work with the cable exiting the side of the hood like your setup.

Bar Mitt has an option - Bar Mitts - Ride in Comfort However, my first choice is to work with a local guy that does custom work: Pogies / Gupgum Gear He doesn't currently have a dropbar pogie, but it's on his 'to-do' list, so I can be his early adopter.

I use a bike rack and a trunk bag they work great for gear plus room for misc stuff as needed

How big is big enough?

Has anyone found any instance where a 4" tire is not big enough and that a 5" would do better? I'm wondering if there's an outer limit where going even bigger provides minimal benefit.

it all depends on your weight and snow conditions. I ride 4.7 and many times wished for more tire this winter. I am fat and slow.

Ride report !

My intention today was to try out the new vee rubber speedsters, purchased under the origin8 label, and find out what all the fuss is.

Comparison tire is the stock Framed brand knobbie that came with my still mostly stock Minnesota 2.0.

With no scale to go by, they don’t seem any lighter and may be a tad heavier than the traction tire. Also, there’s an arrow imprinted in the sidewall to denote direction of roll. I lucked out when I put label side to the drive side. That’s when I noticed the pressure recommendation. 36psi !
Once mounted and centered, I set the pressure at 20 and went around the block. Yes they self steer like crazy. Likely due to the different tread patterns. They felt a bit squishy at 20 so I went to 26 and it felt much better and the steering issue lessened a bit. I hung the bike as I was in recovery mode Monday and Tuesday.
Today I took it for a regular 20 miler, flat, with headwind out and tailwind back. Not the best scenario for testing a tires go fast ability. And on the return I suffered a flat, so I walked a bit until I got to a maintenance facility for a golf course where I was able to re-seat and re inflate the tire (yaaay Schrader valves!) enough to ride to the nearest station, grab a can of fix a flat, (desperate times) top off the air and crank it on home. Speed test !
The butt-dyno says yes, they are faster. Mainly because they don’t have all those flat knobs pushing air 360 degrees. They still require the same amount of energy to get spooled up as the traction treads, but once rolling, easier to keep pace.
Despite running a higher pressure they still give a pretty cush ride without the bounce and noise of a standard fat tire, even in the bumpy stuff.
Since I knew about the self steer issue, I was ready to deal with it. So over all upon first test, I give a 6 /10. With a possible 8 after more play time and fiddling with pressure.

Toad-keeps a lot of crap off drive train (BB & front cog). And has a freaky old school "bomber" look. Of course when I'm down in the drops grinding into 15 mph headwinds I don't feel very bomber.
