My bike was stolen...

I dont know how many of you live in the Danville/San Ramon area, but today my pride and joy was stolen at about 2:45 PM while I was in the Danville Ace Hardware asking my boss what time I could come to work tomorrow. I was in the store for no more than 2 minutes, and It was gone when I came out. The helmet was thrown aside and the bike was nowhere in sight. My friend and I looked everywhere we could but still no luck. I filed a report with the police, and had the officer fill up an entire piece of paper with descriptions of the bike. I let the guys at the shop know what happened, and we dug up my frame's serial number and gave that to the police. I did notice a camera in the store next door that definitely would have seen the theif, but the manager said they cant open the security stuff and that the police have to request the footage, so I am still waiting on that.

The bike was a 2004 Specialized Hardrock Pro, the clearcoat was pretty scuffed up, Marzocchi Z1 FR, Hayes Mags G1 calipers, Ringle 20mm front hub, Kenda Kinetics 2.35 Stick-E tires, Bontrager saddle. The rear hydro line was looped up and held with a zip tie next to the lever, and everything else on the bike was stock; the Ditch Witch 32 spoke rims, Truvativ FiveD cranks, pedals, bars, "Mobius" stem, cassette, chain, and of course, frame. Now I dont have a bike to ride :cry::cry:

Sorry to say they probably won't open up that security footage either.

Hopefully some dumbass tries to sell it to your LBS and gets caught.

I feel sorry for you, and I hope you get your bike back. Did your parents have any insurance covering it?

Yeah man thats horrible. i bet after that you will never leave you bike anywhere w/o using a lock! lol :p

Yeah my dad has USAA. I must have spent around 800 fycking dollars on top of the cost of the bike.

As long as you have receipts you are good. Or get a shop owner to write an estimate. There will be a way to recover that :)

What about all the labor that went into building it? The fork was bought with cash, and had no receipt. I can still contact the guy if I want. Everything else has a receipt from jenson or paypal.

Well you might not be able to recover it all, but get what you can. We (at least a few of us) will try to help where we can. I have spare parts around as do others I am sure. I would be willing to send you some stuff.

Labour won't get covered, but really if you get a quote from a shop for the fork you should get back most of your money.

:( sorry. It does suck when all your efforts are gone like that, but like it was said likely you will get a decent sum of the $ back due to insurance. Ive gotten into the habit of always carrying a padlock with me if im planning to stop somewhere unless its on the trail, since i dont really get off the bike then

I get nervous leaving my bike outside a gas station while I buy a drink so I try to keep it within eye sight

think about it this way, the thief probably rode it a way as fast as he could and got hit by a transport truck but amazingly leaving your bike unscuffed and the culprite dead.

I grew up in Danville, and still visit there 3-5 days a week (I'm in Livermore now). I'll keep an eye out for it. Was it the Ace next to Walgreens? Did you let Ca pedler, danville bike and that newer shop by Andronicos market know and to keep a look out for it?

ok well i was j/k on that one, i really do think our expensive bikes being stolen should give the criminal grand larceny, no matter WHAT age, even if its some stupid 10 year old punk kid. stealing leads to much worse crimes. stop it while you can...but i forget we are in USA, the country that protects the criminals and turns their back on the good guys...

hope you get it back though, id hate to loose any of my bikes.

ps: go to walmart, buy bike cable...lock your next bike up...got it? :) theft prevention (most of the time)

or you could do something like the chinese do to protect their cars. they use stuff like a lawnmower blade or flame thrower to prevent theft. but i thought of something that would work on a bike. place a taser on your toptupe and disguise it. set up a simple pressure trigger on you seat then if anyone ever tries to steal you bike BAM theyll get a tazer right in the balls and your bike will be just fine
