The Caad 10 of the Mountain Bike World

I've been riding road for the past 8 years. I want to start riding trails in San Diego. Aesthetically I tend to like minimal bikes, which is why (with the little research I have done) I am attracted to hardtails or even rigid.

What's your guys' thoughts on a bike like this as my first mountain ride ($650 on CL)?

How easy would it be to add gears (because I am certain I will get over SS very quickly)?

Or would I be better off with something like this ($650 on CL):

Or maybe you guys can point me in a better direction?
Here are some of the bikes I have been looking at/influenced by:

I'll take a guess and say these bikes are out of my budget (~$1,000) but is there a way to get a similar aesthetic at my budget? Basically the Caad10 of the mountain bike world is what I am looking for. Versatile, stylish, durable, workhorse, no frills but still excellent quality for the price. The best bang for the buck ride...in black!

Last thing, I would potentially like to race as well, but that is not a huge priority...so I guess versatility should be factored in.

Hope this is not confusing, I expect the bike porn to keep you entertained enough to help me out

Thanks!

This is also available for $400.

26" wheels but does it really matter?
