Is a Raleigh M60 a good starter bike?
 

I found a Raleigh M60 on my local CL for $100. It looks like a 2004 model and in good condition. Is this a good mountain bike for general riding and learning on? The parts look to be pretty good, but what should I look out for?

From what I see of its specs on Bikepedia, it looks like it would be a fine starter at a reasonable price.

I just got back from checking out a 2005 Raleigh M60. The bike was in good physical condition, albeit dirty. The gears shifted pretty good, the tires were almost new but caked with mud, but the front brakes were a little squeaky when pushed hard. Not sure if it needs pads or just a good tuneup. The owner is asking $100. Is that a good price given that a tuneup will run me another $80 or so? I know that it can be cleaned up to look really good.

Pictures would be helpful, but if the bike is in good shape, not beat down or worn out, that would be a fine bike for cross country riding. Not the lightest or the best, but it should serve well for its intended purpose. I have an older M80 that has been battered and beaten more than any bike should and it still comes back for more. Just know that this isn't the kind of bike you should spend all kinds of time and money to try to upgrade. Just ride the hell out of the thing and fix anything that may break.

IF the fork is in good shape, that's a pretty good price. But check out the fork carefully. It's the most expensive component on the bike.
