Older downhill bike (y22), still viable?
I have a '97 Trek Y22, great shape fully functional.
Used it only a few times 98-2000 for downhill riding, haven't since then.. just regular round-town rides.
I'm gonna be going again 1st time since, so question is,
Would you still rock this thing if you only intention was to stick to greens, perhaps easier blue trails/nothing serious?
Or would it be akin to hitting the slopes with some straight alpine skis from the 60's?
IOW, a spectacle.

I just started riding my 1990 Trek 820. Aside from new tires, it's been fine.

I don't think the hills have changed any. As long as everything's in good shape I'd do it.

More of an XC bike than a down hill bike isn't it? If it is still in good shape I don't see why not. It isn't going to peform as well as a modern full suspension bike but whoopty do you have it so ride it.

Y22 was never a downhill bike even in its day. Yes, you could ride the greens and play around a little on the blues but you really aren't going to have much fun at it. The suspension isn't up to it and the geometry is woefully inadequate. Remember too that, because they're the easy trails, they get ridden to death and every corner will be a sea of braking bumps. Your Y-bike will rattle your teeth out on 'em.
If you want the experience of recapturing some of the nostalgia of the bike, go right ahead. If you want the experience of a day at the park to have some fun, rent something capable there.
