OK, so I got to thinking: Since I've pretty much built my bike up over the past couple of years into something that is uniquely mine; how many company names do I have on my bike? So, without looking, I started thinking about it and was kind of surprised by the number of different company's that are now fixtures on my ride. I was pretty surpised when, after I counted all of them, I realized that I have a whopping 16 different brand names that help to make up what is my mountain bike.

I listed the names and parts below but, before you look, try to think of all of the names you have on your bike without looking. There's one item that I bet a lot of you guys will miss when you make your counts so, no peeking below and no editing after you post after you're finished.

Take a minute and see if you can figure out how many different names are on your bike.

Hutchinson - Spider tires
Slime - Puncture resistance product
Mavic - Crossmax SL wheelset
Shimano - XTR R-der and crank set & XT shifter/brake levers, F-der, disc brakes
Specialized - Frame
Fox - Triad rear shock & TALUS front fork
Race Face - Seat post
WTB - Rocket Laser V saddle
Salsa - Seatpost skewer
Chris King - Headset
FSA - Stem
Azonic - CF1 riser bars
Yeti - Lock on grips
Crank Bros - Candy pedals
Sram - Powerlink chain
Polar - computer and sensor

Are you counting actual names that show up or are you including the ones that take part in the overall makeup? For instance, do you count that the spokes are made by DT even though there's no apparent label? Would you count the brand of grease and lube that's used?

I have 15 brands if you count only the ones that have visible labels. I have 16 if you count my spokes too. I have 18 if you count the grease/anti-sieze (TiPrep) and lube (DuMonde Tech).

Very cool. I'm actually surprised that pretty much every one of you have at least as many different brands on their bikes as me. This pretty much proves that, when it comes to components, there is little or no brand loyalty in MTB'ing as we'll put just about anything on our bikes as long as it works and makes the bike better than it was before. It also means that we all like to make our bikes "our own."
