anyone else have a wacko heart beat

I havent been riding much in the last few years. When i ride my heart beats to fast and it pumps real hard. It also takes a long time to go away. I hope i can recondition my heart.

Anyhelp is good. Also i am a non-smoker

Your condition is pretty common. If you haven't been riding much lately your heart isn't pumping blood and oxygen very efficiently, so it needs to beat more times. Just keep riding and your body will become used to the exercise and become more efficient. Your heart won't need to beat as fast.

thanks alot that makes me feel alot better. as my heart is still kind of sore after today. I think i also forget to breath and also i guess i shouldnt drink pop after a hard ride.

If you're worried, see a doctor...medical help from a mountain biking forum probably isn't the best resource.

You may want to invest in a heart rate monitor to help keep track of things during workouts.

I've been riding for quite some time now and I ride road, run, swim, surf, lift and do other "cardio" to boot but my heart-rate will still peak 190 on a solid climb and I've been known to have it "hover" around the low 180's for looooooooooong periods of time when I'm blasting (or what counts for "blasting" as far as my body's concerned) up a long climb. I've had it checked and, according to my doctors (yes, I've seen two) I'm in excellent cardio vascular shape so that heartrate spike is pretty much just how I'm built...you may be the same.

This year yes, I out of shape, fat, and coming off a season of very little trail riding. My hr is being ridiculous and I am having difficulty reigning it in. I am going to waste a good 3 months 'training' just trying to get it working up to snuff to do the trails in the area, that sucks.

yeah same hear. as it gets going just a little to fast and pumping just a little to hard for what i like. I think there is other muscles around the heart that can tighten up and cause an uncomfortable feeling. Good thing is that it gets better all the time [ i hope ]. After yesterday my heart kept on acting up even hours after the ride and it also was keeping me awake last night. Today i do feel better.

if you are having trouble like this hours after your ride that is a true sign of overworking your muscles and your heart. if your heart rate or rythmn is truly keeping you up at night that could be a serious issue that requires medical attention.

not to freak you out or anything, but even the most out of shape riders should not be having trouble with a rapid heart rate hours after a ride, and especially not when sleeping.

you may need to get yourself checked out. even young athletes can have congenital cardiac issues that can be life-threatening

i went riding today. i dont think this is exactly related but my heart was beating pretty fast. i thought id try this drop for the first time. its vertical for about 4 ft then on to a tranny. i went way too fast and landed much furthur down the tranny than id expected. my 4 feet turned into about 8 and because im not real experienced i was positioned all wrong. i winded myself pretty bad on the seat (could've been alot worse). like i said, my heart was beating very fast (i imagine i probably skipped a few beats!)

Whats considered wacko? 280 beats per minute? thats what mine was measured at the local ER during an event of my SVT (super ventricular tachycardia sp.?) any how that was lots of fun!! Its fixed now and has been problem free for the last 4 years so, needless to say if you ever experience a seemingly in error reading you may have an underlying problem! It is no light matter when dealing with your heart.

One other thing to consider when it comes to heartrate is your hydration level. If you are not properly hydrated before and during a ride, your heartrate will sputter out of control.

During my first 24hour race I was the team anchor which meant that I was on the first lap and I had to do the stupid LeMans start (a 1/2 mile run with about 1,000 of your closest before you get to your bike for the first lap) in temperatures that peaked 100 (the friggin weather report said that it was supposed to be in the mid 70's!) I ran the lap with full gear and wasn't properly hydrated. When I got to my bike, my heartrate monitor had me pegged at 198BPM! I figured it would go down from there but no such luck; I rode the entire first lap (almost 10 miles with over 2,000 feet of climbing) of that race with my heartrate hovering between 190 and 198! I saw stars, wanted to puke and felt like passing out for the entire lap.

The moral of this story is that improper hydration can be an absolute killer when it comes to heartrate.

Well you can research the condition but its basically when the SA node(where your heart beat begins) grows into another chamber of your heart. Thus the beat originates in two places causing a rapid heart rate. The procedure to fix it is called an ablation, where they insert a cath laser into a femural artery and cauterize the extended growth of the node. Parden the spelling and generic explanation as I am no med wiz. As for symptoms there really arent any, other thanan irregular heart beat and rapid beating. (or at least those are the only symptoms I had). I dont recall it as being terribly life threatining in adults, mainly children and adolecents. Unless it causes a blackout, which is a highly likely outcome, and you are driving a car or something else similar. Any how hope that ramble helped.

Hey, don't be hating us! We're here to help you.

Make sure you tell your doc everything associated with it. When I read your symptoms I got worried. I'm no cardiologist, but I have done enough of the heart (in med now and in undergrad) to know that you should NOT be feeling your heart after a good workout. Yes, your rate may stay high, and that's ok to feel that, but when you say that your heart felt Pained, that had me worried. Then when you told me that it kept you up at night, I got really worried! I'm glad you're going to a doc, keep us all posted. It probably won't be anything major. Cardiologists have it easy, those overpaid bastards. Even when there are problems, imaging and treatment techniques are so advanced for yer heart that they can fix some complicated ****, especially in a young healthy heart. Great that you don't smoke too. Overall, it may just be that your heart is a bit funky, my buddy is a great athlete and he occasionally has skipped beats, but still, glad you're checking it out.

From an exercise perspective, the guy above who said you have to push your heart and body to the limit is kinda wrong. Yeah, you have to reach a good point to make any gains. That point would be about 80% your healthy max. You can go at that for hours, and you'll make great gains physically/athletically. However, when you're continually pushing yourself to the point of passing out, you're doing damage. You hugely increase the risk of an infarct (lack of oxygen to heart tissue), and you'll know that for sure by the pain in your chest, possibly shooting down the arms, etc. Save those insane limit-pushing moments for the races you're in, keep it down a bit for training. You'll notice that you do a lot better overall.
