X-Caliber Frame and Fork 2011. Should I? If so, what?

I am seeing a 2011 X-Caliber frame with a Reba RL fork available on Craig's List for about $275. It seems like a nice frame from everything I've been able to read about it. I like working on bikes and would have no problem installing components on it. I am considering selling my 93 Gary Fisher Aquila and my 90's Raliegh Technium Pro Road bike, because I am moving and really will only have room for one bike. I love mountain biking and live in a city with plenty of trails and potholes but am strictly an amateur rider. I road bike with a bunch of older fellas who don't rid as much as me. Figuring I can either get two sets of tires or just go with wide slicks and consider the traction issues a challenge on the trails and do both. So - Is this frame a good value at $275? Does it work for the kind of riding I like to do? Any suggestions on components? I'm thinking, Shimano SLX drive-train. Want Hydraulic brakes. Figure 1st wheel set should be strong for the trails (I am a bit heavy). Trying to keep price down but still end up with something nice. Thoughts?

Is it the right size for you? That's the first and most obvious question. After that, it depends entirely on the fork. If the stanchions look good and it cycles smoothly, it could be worth $275. (Always try to negotiate less, of course!)

I would plan on dropping the lowers and replacing the seals and bath oil right away. If the stanchions are chewed up or the damper is blown, I wouldn't entertain this purchase at all.

In the pic on line the stanchions look very clean. How do you tell if a damper is blown? Guy seems like he is OK in my conversations so far.

Size - Stand over height is good & as I have a very long torso I figure a cross country bike with a G2 geometry should work for me. I suppose I should check out the LBS that handles treks and see what they recommend in an x-Caliber frame size. But it is very chilly out.
