I sold my rear Rhyno Lite so I can upgrade to disc brakes. I'm thinking of using Rhyno Lite on XTs as training wheels, and 717s on XTs as my race wheel set. Now, I'm wondering if the Mavic 717 will stand up to everyday abuse and if I am wasting money by using the Rhyno Lites as a training wheel?? Simple because these two wheelsets are VERY close in price...

I'm about 190 lbs, and I ride mostly techcial trails with max 1ft drops..

Comments/Suggestions???

Depends more on the build than anything else, that said, 717s laced up by an expert builder will be plenty durable enough for you. I'd just go for that set rather than arsing around with 2 sets of wheels. Maybe spend your entire budget on the one and get some better lighter hubs like 240s or Hope XCs.

I would go for other rims. Most people on this forum seem to disagree but if you ask me, as nice as Mavic products are. THey are way overpriced. Sun or velocity makes a fine product and a finer price. I would consolidate your funds into one really nice set of wheels. Get some 240's on there, super light and you can get a set of non disc from IcyclesUSA on ebayt for 200

240s maybe nice, but aren't they priced just as much as Kings now?? I may look around for a used wheelset laced on King ISOs...Not quite sure yet

I did some research on hubs, but found the more expensive ones dont really roll any better than XTs, but they simply are more maintainance free. The 72 teeth engagement in Kings are nice, but I dont seeing myself needing something like that for XC racing. That is why I was considering XT hubs because they seem very nice for the money.

However, if I find a nice deal on a set of Kings with the Rims I want (717 or DT 4.1d), I may splunge the cash for them

Also, $199 for XTs on 717s seems pretty reasonable to me The equipment I really want is XTR flippy shifters with XTR discs and a rapid rise XTR rear deraileur. At the same time, I want to get a new bar, grips...etc Since I still have a somewhat limited budget, I'd really like to spend my money on the wisest choices possible.

As of now, I fail to make myself believe Hugi or even King are worth it even to use during races, especially when the hub sits in the middle of the wheel

Then get something like. Onyx. I built a wheel for a guy a month ago and we found a super nice deal.

Ask them for the matching rear hub, they will sell it for 99 dollars +6.50 to ship. THe retail on onyx is usally much higher. Ive built 2 wheels of that front hub.
Seriously though, get something better than XT. At least Jujus, they are disc ready, and the life expectancy is much longer

Funny thing is, my friend is running the same front hub, and I was looking at that set of hubs myself!! He couldn't believe me when I told him I could get that hub for 20 bucks!!! He paid over 100 off some guy who split a set

I'll probably get at least a sealed cartridge bearing hub set and get my LBS to put it on 717s or something similar in the Sun line up

Suns are where it's at. I'm also of the opinion that Mavic is overpriced, plus I've had unsexy results dealing with their customer service. Check out the Sun DS-1 and DS-2; only difference is that one is pinned while the other is pinned and welded.
Alternately, you could run their UFO rim with discs-with the black braking surface it doesn't really look all that different from a disc rim (if you're hung up on that), and it's actually lighter by a bit.

You tell em. Im running Sun 0 degree lites, they are not disc specific but im not running discs and they will work with discs. I got them on ebat in a set for 30. You can find them cheap elsewhere. Those hubs by the way, amazing.
