    need some steelhead setup opinions

I'm considering getting a Steelhead and just needed some rider input, considering I don't know many people riding up here. Anyway, the steelhead has two sizes, pro and pro xl, and was curious what size would be better. I'm 5'11" and weigh 130ish. 21.75 top tube on the pro and 22.75 on the pro xl. I was thinkin pro xl. Also considering putting one of those E Type Shimano front derailleurs and going two chainrings infront because those gears are nice to have around Alaska. As far as tires I was pretty indicisive on width, I wanted something that wouldn't be too resistant on pavement but still held decent in some dirt. thanks

Maybe High rollers for the tyres? I would go fo9r the shorter top tube, it makes all the difference when come to doing technical drops and trails, as the bike is easier to pull up and more manuvourable.

ya dude, I was actually looking at rollers on Jenson yesterday, couldn't decide on a width though. I was leanin more towards the 2.5s and putting those maxxis dh tubes in there. Just worried it'd be soggy on pavement.

When i get mine, im running 2.5 in the front for grip, and 2.35 in the back for speed i think.

Ive been told they're good all round tyres, hardwearing, good in mud, good in dry conditions..

Why get a steelhead if you're going to do XC riding and crap with it? It's heavy, and the geometry isn't really conducive to long-ish rides.

I think the ideal setup for one of those would be:

    RockShox Pike Team fork
FSA X-drive crankset, 34t Profile chainring
Surly SS hubs, rhyno lite XL rims, 16t cog
.243 racing bars with cross brace
    Avid mech discs
    Maxxis Holy Rollers

It has horizontal dropouts for a reason

Well I was goin for a sturdy setup I can do serious freeride and urban stuff with. The whole thing with the second chainring I figured was a good idea because even on the streets theres hills everywhere in Anchorage and I can push through some trails easier. I don't do many crazy long rides and I wasn't just getting it for xc. The steelhead was recommended and it seems like a savage frame. For a hundred fifty I don't think I could do better.

Thanks Madman for the ideal setup, I've already got the Avid BB Fives, and I found a sweet deal on some Fox Vanilla 125s a few months ago. Bought some other parts here and there. Frame, crankset, and wheels are really all thats left, and was definitely gonna go with the Rhyno Lites. Just gotta figure out if I'm gonna go single chainring in front.
