cycling grand teton np & yellowstone w/the kiddos
did a search and didn't find any recent notes on cycling either grand teton np or yellowstone np.
looks like the grand teton np and surrounding towns now have some great bike paths but yellowstone
still doesn't.
headed up there in 2 weeks with the kiddos aged 23 and 26 to do some relatively easy and scenic
road cycling. likely, no rides longer than 25-30 miles and nothing with any substantial elevation gain
of more than 1,000 feet or so for those 25-30 miles (or less). grand teton np looks to be more
navigable on road bike vs yellowstone but thinking of doing small chunks of day rides of yellowstone over
the course of 1-1.5 days with 10-25 mile rides interspersed with drives to the next cycling area.
anyone have any recent cycling experience with gtnp and/or ynp area(s) and recommendations,
must-do's or must-don'ts? i'm comfy with heavy, crazy traffic but they won't be so looking for a calmer
experience for their cycling pleasure. we'll be up there after labor day. thanks in advance!

After Labor Day will be better than before, but you very well may still encounter traffic, especially in the Old Faithful area, where I understand there is now a freeway-type clover leaf ramp set up. Riding as early as possible is the best way to go.
Steer way clear of the Buffalo that sometimes lounge on the side of the road.
Jenny Lake area was pretty. Maybe a loop from Moose using Teton Park Rd. and then U.S. 191 through Moran and back to Moose.
I remember not liking U.S. 191 from West Thump down through Coulter Bay due to speeding traffic and no shoulder. And you want to avoid Old Faithful to West Thumb since you have some good elevation gain there.
W. Yellowstone to Madison Jct. was pretty tame. Just don't remember it being overly scenic.
Haven't ridden in other parts of the parks, but it looks like U.S. 89 from Madison Jct. up to at least Norris Geyser Basin has a nice shoulder. I don't believe it did when I was there 16 years ago.
Bring cool weather riding clothes. Lows can dip down into the 20s in September.

Check the status of the ongoing fires. Last I heard they expect them to burn into September.
