I am a newbie from Wichita. I am looking for a cheep hybrid or roadbike to start with. Used would suit me just fine. Anyone know of anything?

If you do not find anything Bicycle Exchange on Central has used bikes...has been awhile so not sure if there prices are high or not..other than that, keep your eyes open at garage sales or here on this electronic wondr.

I was just online, trying to see what it was like to ride the highways out in farmland. Apparently you get a lot of things thrown at you. I don't know what to do about it. There's often no shoulder, traffic goes 80, and they're not expecting to see a bicycle. I'd be traveling alone. I'd probably end up in a wheatfield.

The back roads are at least noisy so I can get out of the way of a semi or Mobile Home mover, but I don't know the area well enough to know what the small roads are like. I suppose I can drive a route first, to check it out, but that seems pretty lame.

Anyone else in that area? I'm not good enough to ride with you, but at least I'd know you're there...

I live in harper ~25 miles away from you. I work for the electric company that services Conway. You are right about there not being very good places to ride. Your best option would probably be parallel Rd. It's all asphalt. It's supposed to be a 55 mph Rd but some people like to fly down it. On the other hand people in this area may not be looking for bikes they are normally pretty attentive drivers due to all the farm equipment moving around the area. I could give you a few more roads to ride you just might have to drive a few miles and park if you don't feel comfortable on the highways. One last piece of advice is NEVER ride during harvest of any kind.

Born and raised in Harvey County--lived in Walton, went to HS in Newton. Wandered around a bit--Emporia, Wichita, Pratt, Oklahoma (that was a mistake!), Arkansas City, Salina. Newby here.
