Spin classes? - Denver

Hi All,
Just moved to Denver yesterday! Have already started looking for a gym... I've seen a lot of 24 Hour Fitness centers, and there are several within .5-5 miles of my house, which is appealing (I'm only so motivated to go if I have to drive, run, or bike far to get there!)

Just wondered if anyone here has engaged in their Spin classes, or have any other gyms you'd recommend? They have a "$0 association" ending tomorrow, and I wont be able to get in for a trial run (but they are no contract and pretty reasonable fee-wise, so I might give it a shot unless someone has bad news!)

Thanks!
:speedy:

I am not a pro by any means but I have done a couple of the spin classes at the 24 by my house (up north) and the are quite challenging. I highly recommend them if you're looking for a good, intense workout.

Sounds good, thanks pwnt! I think I'll join on tomorrow. I have to pay the 1st and last month at joining and their association fee is free right now, so essentially I'm only bound to 2 months. not too bad if it flops.

If for some reason that falls through you can check out a LBS near you. Several up in my area offer spin classes in winter. My rec center about a mile away has spin classes as well.
Perhaps someday I will give them a try but when I can ride outdoors year round....

yeah... I am still thinking I'm too wussy for that year- around riding. :)

I think the quality of the 24 hr Fitness depends on the neighborhood. I belonged to one for a while that had a problem with vandalism and someone was actually mugged in the locker room. I now belong to Cherry Creek Athletic Club. It is pricey, but if you swim, it is the place to go. They have 2 lap pools (indoor and out) and a leisure pool (outside). The outside pools are open from March thru November.

Oh, I forgot to mention that Cherry Creek Athletic Club has good spin classes. More importantly, they have spin bikes with clipless pedals on the exercise floor as well.

The "best" club for you is as they say in real estate Location, location location
if its not easy for you to access your usage (and benefits) goes down.

hmm yeah I have driven by there a few times.
I did join 24hour on friday- I had to pay the 1st and last months at once, so at most I'm bound for 2 months. I'll test drive it :)

CCAC is also filled with old folks. I am 40, and you seem younger than I am, so just another thing to keep in mind.

Again, biggest reason for this club is swimming.

Welcome to Denver.

artifice, I hope you are getting outside to ride today, the unseasonably warm weather is nearing an end. If it's not too late, come to the RMCC's ride (starts in Longmont, a bit of a drive for you) at 9:45 - I'll be the short girl on a ti bike with white bar tape, say hi!

DJ, PWNT, get out here.

Pwnt 11-02-08 09:59 AM

Working Dear. The people of Denver need me.

I did not get out to ride :( Maybe a quickie around the block later today.
PM sent- lets catch up for a ride sometime!

Yeah, I was under-impressed by 24 hour fitness's 2-lane lap pool (2 lanes?!) but then, I don't swim much. I keep telling myself I'm oing to swim more- maybe get into tri's.... at any rate, so... not too critical at this point.

apparently i was supposed to sign up early for the spin class today, and pay $1 (what? I pay to be a member- kinda confused about the paying for class thing, would have appreciated being told this when I toured?) so... no spinning today.

Pwnt 11-02-08 12:39 PM

I've never heard of that either. I know you gotta sign up early but never heard of the dollar thing. Your getting scammed or someone's messing with you.

Ok, your new here so I will give you a small pass today, but lets do a little educating.

When its November,
and its 75+ outside,
get outside any way you can.
This is not normal.

That is all,

Except to gloat about my 4 hour meandering from Golden to Wash Park to Littleton to Morrison and back to Golden. Glorious.

 grr i know, i am wasting good weather! if you had a solution for my poor sense of direction and the fact that I know nothing about the area? that is the real problem!

Pwnt 11-03-08 05:37 AM

Mountains are always West! Broadway and Ellsworth are the ZERO streets. There. Now you can get anywhere in this town.

valygrl 11-03-08 08:21 AM

There's a great bike-route/path map of Denver available at bike shops for a few bucks.

DataJunkie 11-03-08 09:54 AM

Denver's bike map is also viewable online.
I would suggest that map and the DBTC map. DBTC is far better.

I think the $1 is if you want to reserve a spot ahead of time and not have to worry about getting there before it fills up. At least that's the case at the location I go to.
