Denver Event: Urban Assault Ride - July 26, 2009

I'm helping to promote this event as a volunteer because this event is THE reason I got into cycling. My friend and I did it last year and had a blast. I hadn't ridden a bike in 10 years and we actual got 3rd place in the Women's division. So, I bought my first road bike and have started commuting to work 2-3 times a week (approx. 30 miles round trip).

The Urban Assault Ride™ is a funky bike scavenger hunt that involves street-smart riding, obstacle courses, and a huge after party. Mental muscle is just as important as bike skills as teams of 2 choose their own course to checkpoints around the city.

The event is well known for its checkpoints where zany obstacle courses must be completed before moving on. We're talking modified Big Wheels, Bike Jousting, The Keg Walk, Inflatable Slides...and much more. The first team to hit all of the checkpoints and cross the finish line wins! Then the party begins with New Belgium beer and lots more two-wheeled shenanigans!

So, why on earth would you want to do the Urban Assault Ride?
Here are 10 (very good) reasons to sign up:

    1.It is fun - a party on a bike.
2.It is great to do with kids, significant others, or friends.
3.Any bike will do just fine.
4.It's more about having fun than going fast.
5.Huge after party with lots of free New Belgium beer.
    6.The obstacles are a blast.
7.You will laugh so hard your stomach hurts.
8.It is a "Green" event with a focus on sustainability.
9.It's a fun and non-threatening way to learn your way around town so you can commute or run errands on your bike.
10.You'll see how much easier it can be to grab your bike lock rather than your car keys.

It looks like it can be fun, just please obey the rules. Last year I almost hit a group with my car as they crossed 12th Ave on the Broadway sidewalk while I had a green light. Looks like Broadway is off limits. All sidewalks should be off limits as well.

Yes, obeying the rules is very important because, not only is it the law to keep you safe, but they will disqualify you from the race if you don't. I saw a team almost get disqualified because the started to ride the wrong direction on the bike path at Wash Park.

The race organizers are very vocal about teaching people how to commute around town safely.
