To the singlespeeder on Falcon Trail 10 Nov 09
This is an apology.
I was on an out-and-back lunch ride on Falcon Trail on the Air Force Academy. If you are familiar with the trail, the western part going clockwise is basically one big-a$$ climb. I suffer on that climb.
So I hear this guy coming up behind me, and I scoot over to let him by. As he hammers by, I see he's on a singlespeed. Whether it was oxygen deprivation or what, I said "You guys make me sick!". And then I yelled "Singlespeeder". I'm not sure of my thought process - I think I was trying to be funny, or even make a connection with the guy. As I thought about it, though, I realized it sounded really stupid and, well, stupid. I really sounded like Grandpa Simpson yelling at someone. I've got tons of respect for singlespeeders. This guy was doing with one gear what I have trouble with using 27. I was much nicer to his buddy on a full boinger GF - I think because I had stuffed my lung back where it belonged by the time he passed.
I obvously couldn't catch the guy - by the time I caught my breath on the first switchback, he was gone. So, if you were the singlespeeder on what I affectionately call 'HillZilla' around 1:15pm on 10 Nov 09, I respect the hell out of you. It just didn't come out that way.
