Disturbed
As if this https://www.9news.com/rss/article.aspx?storyid=148677 is not bad enough. I chose to read the comments of other 9 news readers and have since been quite disturbed by what I read.
I am wondering if people's attitudes towards cyclists are truly this poor in Colorado. It sounds like a discussion about politics or religion, I have a hard time believing that some would get so upset about another person riding their bicycle...

There is a cadre of folks who spend their time responding to internet articles, news and reports. They even get to know each other. I have had news articles and stories in which I have been involved in other areas, and you can count on these responses. You can disregard them, as they are non-representative of the general public. Just another snarky group of folks - much like you get on some forums here on BFN.

If you look at almost any story on the 9news site you'll see the same apparently violent polarization of views. The Denver Post website is only marginally more civilized. Having ridden in the Denver area for 4 or 5 years now I have found motorists here to be almost universally polite & considerate - sure, there are jerks in cars (just as there are jerks on bikes) but they are very much in the minority.
Having said that I'll probably get run off the road this morning...

I should have trusted my own instincts it seems. I have been riding regularly in the metro area for about a year and a half now, however, a year of that was spent primarily on bike trails. This year I made my way out onto the road to train for the Copper Triangle. I would say that for the most part my experience with vehicles has been a positive one. I do my part to follow the rules and get left alone. The window shouters have made an appearance a few times but whatever right? Usually this has involved northern Colorado... You know, camouflage and 4x4's. Ha ha. I'm glad to hear your perspectives.

I would agree with the responses here.....but with a caveat. I don't think it's wise to completely disregard the comments. I'd compare it to lightning. The chances are you won't get struck in your lifetime, but your chances significantly increase when there are dark clouds around. Just because it isn't representative of the majority doesn't mean a few wackos scattered around can't be the ones wreaking havoc on you. No, it doesn't dissuade me from riding.....but I'm selective as to where I ride on streets/highways and when. All it takes is one "Go Bryce" type person to go haywire. So I think in one sense it is disturbing that there is more than one person who condones the alleged behavior against cyclists.

I agree, one definately has to ride defensively. This weekend I was riding through Golden and observed an angry guy in a truck honk and make gestures at a fellow cyclist. Apparently the guy in the truck wanted the cyclist to take off faster after the light had changed to green. Really, what's the rush? The speed limit is like 25mph in that area. Interesting to watch someone throw a tantrum so easily over something so little. I think this sort of inability to deal with small inconveniences speak volumes about some of our society in general...
