    Columbia MO

Very close to moving to Columbia. Any good clubs in the area? Just started racing Cat5 with a good sponsor and I wish to continue racing. Also is it bike friendly enough to go car free, even whith a 5 year old? So how many Columbians here?

I went to college in Columbia. Walts bike shop has a racing team that competes in road and cyclocross races. Very cool guys. My old roommate is on the team. The University of Missouri-Columbia has a team as well. I'm betting you'd have to be a student to get on though. Always saw them riding up and down the streets.

Columbia bikers and motorists have a pretty bad relationship. Mainly due to the number of inexperienced bikers that the college brings into town. Could you go car free, of course. But it would really matter where you lived. It's an awesome city. I had a blast there. Get a cross bike and ride all the gravel trails. You won't regret it.

PM me with where you plan on moving, and I'll let you know what's cool around you.

Where are you moving from? I think you'll be happy with Columbia, as far as biking is concerned. Tons of great little restaurants as well.

Can't PM you back until I hit 50 posts. So I'll just leave my response here.

Columbia is becoming a much nicer cycling town in recent years. The last mayor was a big cycling advocate and had a bunch of trails and bike lanes constructed. I think you'll be happy with the move. The only downside is Missouri weather. It's just about as unpredictable as you can imagine. And humid. Always humid.

Humid, compared to what? Its usually around 95% here and around 95f half the year. The cycling I'm sure will not be impressive but where I live now its appalling.

I wish I were familiar with Columbia. In my lost youth I spent a week or two with cousins from the SW corner of town. I saw the trail coming off Columbia to the Katy last fall. Several serious cyclists exited the trail at high speed as I went by in the afternoon. Good luck on your decision.

Thanks Blues Frog. We will know for sure this week. Since not many on the forum seem to be from Columbia, I think the best thing is to just call around the local bike shops for ride groups. The only thing we are going by right now is google maps checking out what parts of town have bike lanes.
