3/01/05 - Writer's Vista Park (Mineral east of Santa Fe) on Highline Canal (gravel) south to C470 Trail west across Santa Fe, North on PRG past Carson Nature Center to Lee Gulch Trail (gravel), some steep, to Highline south to Writer's.

Use mtn bike, short ride, but slow going.

Lee Gulch is a beautiful trail, with meadows and a small stream, etc.

Hey Dnvr - you were right in my back yard yesterday! Those are some nice trails - but I have yet to do Lee Gulch (it's on my list). I also can't wait for this weekend...

Lee Gulch is fun - but it is quite short - about 3.5 miles from PRG to Jameson and Broadway. Technically, it goes further back behind Littleton Hospital, and I have ridden that, but it is not very exciting and you have to find you way off of Mineral east bound from Broadway.

You could also make a loop using the Big Dry Creek Trail off of PRG, - it will come out just north of Fox and Broadway, you could go s. to Littleton Blvd, west to Broadway and pick up either the Highline Canal by Schlessman YMCA or along the way - it winds back and forth across Broadway from Arapahoe Road going south. Then you could catch the Lee Gulch Trail.

Supposedly, The Big Dry Creek Trail off of PRG is eventually going to be finished through to the Highline Canal, from which you could circle on the Highline Canal towards DeKoevend and catch it again right at the HC bend at DeKoevend over the trail bridge. It eventually dead ends at the South Suburban Golf Course at Colorado just north of County Line. Of course, then you could do just a short distance down Colorado past County Line and catch the C470 Trail again!.

Hope I didn't lose you!

Looking forward to glorious rides in the Boulder area next week! Even though my left knee is healing from a crash on black ice covered with slush.

So will the trails be muddy? Snow and ice on the roads?

Plus I know there will not be much O2. Heard a funny reminiscence (sorta) by a commentator during a recent Nuggets' home game. A visiting coach once exclaimed: "Altitude problems in the Mile High City? What altitude problems? The altitude is outside! It's fine here inside the Pepsi Center!".

Lately it has been sunny and very dry, streets completely clear. Supposed to be 60 this weekend.

But, anything can happen in Colorado weather.

If you are going on the Boulder Trail System, they are, to my knowledge, pretty much cement. Others may know more, as I have only been on them a couple of times.

As far as the oxygen goes, we recommend you bring a sealed jar of lower lever air to open and breathe from when you need replenishing.

Have fun. Are you "roading" or mtn bike?

Franktown And Return!

Hate to tell all you hard working folks, but I went on the CCTrail from my home in Parker to Franktown and returned today - 34.5 miles, my longest ride so far this year. Yes, I know that is peanuts to Lord Opie and Revenig and others, but this is the longest ride I have taken since my heart went into permanent Atrial Fibrillation in Septmeber, 2004 - and I did fine. I am doing this at about 70% heart output, and I am pretty proud of myself.

Oh along the way, met my wife and took a two mile walk and had a Subway.

The worst part of the ride is when you get to CO 86 and have to ride on the 2 inch shoulder with HUGE gravel and other trucks buzzing by at 55 mph.

The turn off to Castlewood canyon road is only .2 miles from where the dirt road leading to the trail meets 86. Thatw ould be a fun ride - all the way down to the State Park. Today, About 5 total miles of gravel road and trail. I used my road bike with absolutely no problem.

Oh, and I did this all in my tights only. In my rush to get off on the ride, I forgot to put on my bicycling shorts.

Went into Franktown for a few cookies and a banana.

What would the "Underwear Nazi" say??? Congrats on the ride - and as for the information above, I followed - thanks! My g/f and I plan to ride a bit this weekend - I'm thinking of doing the Highline Canal around Mineral and see how far she wants to go. Should be dry with all of the warm, breezy weather lately...

Well, <blush>, I DID have my underwear on, OF COURSE! I NEVER forget that!

The best part of the HLC is from Orchard (actually Long's Way) - there is a parking lot at the crossing of the HLC and Long's, right next to the "Preserve" - that community of moderate sized hotels. Then go northways on the canal under Belleview, across Quincy up to Hampden. Horses, monstrously unbelievably large houses, all the Cherry Hills Village stuff, and a wonderful bend around the Kent (private High School) with a lake and meadows.

My wife and I did the Lee Gulch loop today - fun, but a bit slower with both of us.

Tonight we are attending a reunion of the group in which we met 43 years ago. It was a large church group of "Young Adults!" and she was the secretary. So, anyways, she got up in front of the whole group and stated, "I need a date" and gave her phone number, and the rest is history.

Yes, that is who I married - loves to be on the stage, outgoing, personable, extremely fine singing voice. That sort of balances out my drudgely existence rather nicely.

Wonderful bicycling weather today - low 60's. WOW!

Congratulations on finding that special person and making it work for such a long time. She sounds like a keeper.

Yes, it was nice to see the temps in the 60s for once, but I must say that the wind almost blew me off the trail a few times. I was able to ride 87 miles, but I struggled the last 21 miles because of a strong head wind. I needed a nap after that ride and definitely earned my beer.

Interestingly, we had no wind at all in the Littleton area, bt as we drove further east towards Parker on C-470, we got really blasted.

We generally find that Parker has a lot more wind than further west. We have a hard time frowing things due to the wind.

What a Glorious weekend for riding, other then the wind yesterday did some climbing up Lookout with LO it was awesome. I'm already spoiled with the nice weather. I'm going to hate it if it snows.
Hope everyone else had some great rides this weekend.

Got a great ride in this weekend with the g/f. We rode near where Dnvr did - Highline Canal near Lee Gulch, over to Goodson rec center off of University. The weather was absolutely great! It's nice to have the warmth without all of the bugs yet. That said, I did have one (probably the only one out that day! LOL) try to fly in my ear during the ride...

Anyone know the condition of Squaw Pass?

My wife and I are spending a few days in Colorado Springs.

Yesterday, we rode around the Garden of the Gods area. Nice, but the winds were ferocious - enough to blow your bike (and the rider) over!

Anyway, it is snowing today and we are going to visit the Cave of the Winds and perhaps the Olympic Training Center.

When I woke up on Saturday morning, I turned on my weather radio and heard that that snow was on its way. I figured I wouldn't get to ride on Sunday so I went out and rode 103 miles on Saturday.

Started from my place in Highlands Ranch and got on the Platte River Trail. Rode up to Confluence Park then to Cherry Creek Res. where I did three laps around the lake and dam. Took the same route back then rode in Chatfield Res. and then back home. It was dark by the time I got back, but at least I got my miles in before the snow.

Did my longest elevation gain in many months -- 43 miles, ~5000'... according to Topo software.

Rode Morrison to Golden, over Lookout Mt., across I-70 (only two miles), up 74 into Bergen, a couple miles up hwy 103 I realized that I wasn't going to get to Echo Lake, turned back and had to hammer into the wind down Hwy 73 back to Morrison.

That was a bummer, nothing like expecting a 30+ twisty downhill fun only to have to struggle to maintain 25mph against the wind. Plus, my feet hurt for the first time in a long time... I think it was cuz I was putting a lot more pressure on them since my Brooks saddle isn't broken in yet and my butt was getting sore.

But a nice day overall. Met a guy riding a Primus Mootry custom roadie. He said the whole process was great. Yeah, I'm thinking of getting one thru MOB Cyclery.
