Fruita to Pueblo

Sometime in the future I would like to ride cross country west to east starting from San Francisco. Thinking of entering Colorado on 50 and meeting up with the Trans America route in Pueblo. The current plan is no gear and a support vehicle. Looking for the most interesting/enjoyable route as compared to the easiest. Any recommendations for the Colorado segment or to just take Hwy 50. The TransAm comes through the Rockies on Hwy 9 through Breckenridge. Assume the TransAm route is as good as any for Eastern Colorado and Kansas unless somebody has other opinions. Thanks.

US 50 may be the least interesting route possible. Try leaving 50 at Delta, take CO 92/133 to Carbondale, then CO 82 through Aspen and over Independence pass. US 24 N to Leadville, CO 81 to Copper Mountain. Then get on the bike path and go to Breckenridge where you continue on the TransAm. For even more interest, skip 50 from Grand Junction and ride over Grand Mesa.

Thanks for the input. At the time, did not realize that ACA had a Western Express to meet up with the TransAm. When the day comes will most likely follow that route.

mje's route is better than the western express

This is the way to go.

Not only that but the stretches from Montrose to Gunnison and Salida to Canon City are not the safest places to ride a bike. Twisty, narrow, shoulderless roads with average traffic speeds in excess of 50mph.

The suggested alternate route would be much more pleasant.

Thanks for all of the Colorado suggestions. The Hanksville to Blanding section seems to be the bane of the Western Express. While Ely to Delta, UT does not look appealing are there any Utah alternative recommendations. I have visited most of the Utah parts previously after San Juan Huts x2. Would be interested to here suggestions based purely on quality of riding.
