There’s an app for that. Developed by Cambridge Consultants from the UK and reported by gizmag.

“Unveiled yesterday, the system is controlled by an app on a handlebar-mounted iPhone, and incorporates a stock Shimano Di2 electronic gear-shifting system. Other components include wheel rotation sensors, and a pedaling cadence sensor.”

Bicycle Retailer magazine also reported that Shimano has filed for patents that would incorporate, slope, heart rate, and pedal torque – amongst others – to go into an auto shifting calculation.

I am still using a standard shift (albeit, clutch less) on my car so don’t see a need for it on bikes – but I also thought index shifting wasn't needed.
