Tom, checking the "Remember me" box seems to have solved the timeout problem. Thanks!

I still have to log on each time I visit BF, and until fairly recently I didn't have to do that. It's not a serious enough issue to complain about, though.

I have remained logged in for a couple weeks at a time (only having to dump cookies now and then for other reasons) and I went to IE8 and am back with IE7.

I have no idea why IE7 always cuts in at least once telling me it couldn't load a page and would abort...it's a problem on several platforms not just vBulletin 4 and still resolves with a refresh and must be IE. I don't normally wish to stay logged in so this is an experiment but it does keep me from timing out.

Tom, I noticed that on the "subscriptions" indexes now, we still see the date/time of the last post in the thread, but we no longer see the user name of the person who made the last post. Was it always like that or did it get left out somehow? I don't remember.

Really??? Logging out and then logging back in will solve the time out issue? That time out issue has been an issue since 2003 and I've never heard that solution before. I've heard that I should delete my cookies, and that I should use Remember Me, but never that I should diligently log out when I'm finished my time with BF.

Has this automatic logging out thing never happened to you?

Do this ... log in, but don't click the Remember Me box. Browse around various forums for 10 or 15 minutes, then compose a long reply to a particular thread in the Quick Reply box ... take several minutes to compose your reply. Watch in frustration as your long thread vanishes to be replaced by a message that tells you that you are not logged in and cannot post.

What's happening is that there is a bit of code somewhere in there that is set to log people out after about 15 minutes of "inactivity". I'm not sure what has been deemed "activity" on this forum ... but not much!! "Activity" should be things like ... clicking on a subforum to enter it. Clicking on a thread to read it. Moving the mouse over a thread title to read the preview. Clicking in a Quick Reply box. These are common programming settings and should be fairly easy to change and update. I brought this issue up in 2003 and a number of times since then, but all these years have gone by and no one has gone into the program and made the necessary changes.

I write on several other forums, and this is the only one that has such an incredibly short time-out designation. Most of the rest of them may log you out after several hours of inactivity ... and inactivity being no clicking, no mouse movement, no keyboard movement. As soon as you click on a thread or click refresh or something, that's activity, and you're in for another several hours.

I can see why a forum might want to log someone out eventually after a lengthy period of inactivity for security reasons .... but 15 minutes?????

And in other areas of difficulty ........ I'm still experiencing the situation where I click on a forum .... waaaaaaiiiiiiiiiiiitttttttttt .... click on refresh ....... watch the screen turn grey ...... click on refresh again ......... waaaaaiiiiiiiiittttttttttt ... and then slowly the forum loads. Same with going to page 2 of a thread, or clicking on "Reply with Quote", or most other actions. I have some good days, or good time periods where things will load like they are supposed to. But I have a lot where they don't. I've become very familiar with my refresh button.

I've been continuously logged in to the forum now for about 3 years straight, unless I intentionally logged out for one reason or another. I always use remember me, though. I thought you weren't using remember me, so you could computer share with Rowan, was I remembering wrong? That's the reason I mentioned logging out at the end of your session.

You always use Remember Me. That makes quite a difference.

Log out now and log in again without using Remember Me and see how quick BF is to log you out ... often right when you want to post something ... the longer you take to compose your reply, the more thought and effort you put into your reply, the greater the chance you'll be logged out and your reply will be lost.

A person might not want to use Remember Me for a variety of reasons ... for example, a person might be on a work computer, a university computer, a library computer, or an internet cafe computer. Remember Me can be useful, but there are many times where it is not desireable ... but even when a person would rather not post using "Remember Me", a person would like to remain logged in for more than about 15 minutes.

BTW - that's just amazing that you've remained logged in using Remember Me for three years!! Even using Remember Me, I get logged out about once or twice a month.

My point was, if yo do use remember me at a public computer or shared one, if you just log out before you click out of the forums, all cookies, etc, are cleared. Your account is not accessible to others.....as long as you don't let the browser remember your password. That way, you can use the remember me function to avoid timing out, and still keep your account secure.......as long as you remember to log out when you leave.

That must be the same timeout that is used to mark all threads read. The one I've been complaining about (quietly) for lo! these many moons.

The mechanism kinda makes sense, but the timeout is too short.

It is way too short, and it should be just a simple programming change (i.e. finding the bit of code that deals with timing and typing a new number) to fix it.

Suggesting that we type our user ID, type our password, and then click "Remember Me" even when we don't really want the computer we're working on to remember us, is not a solution. It might be a workaround, but you'd think that after 6 years they would have come up with a solution.

Every time I post something, I sound like a dufus. Do you think it's the vB4.0 software doing that?

Here's a post from Rowan on this very same topic dated 2006 ... it's an ongoing thing which should have been solved ages ago, such as when it was discovered that the timeout is set to 30 minutes (sorry, not the 15 minutes I assumed earlier):

Machka you've got yourself in a lather and it's posted in multiple forums, please relax.

All you are doing is possible scoring automatic infractions and setting yourself up for a sanction for no reason. You give us questions with no context and become frustrated and frantic and push yourself into a corner and it really depresses me. You keep making a fuss about this but I can't fully understand why. I'm not trying to shoot horsehockey and Platypius is an IT with certification as I understand. We'd love to help you. I don't think either of us understands what you want and you don't explain why you think this feature is a security concern, it's just "you know". Tom or most of the admins here can explain better than I can but not without a reason to go on.

    It's not the START treaty.

In his other thread on this topic, Machka questions whether you are an employee. From what you have written above, I can't tell either. Maybe you are, maybe you aren't.

Other than Tom, I don't know who the BF/Internet Brands employees are either. Employees should clearly identify themselves through their signature, or in that phrase above the avatar.

On longer threads, the page count seems to get off. For example, go to the "helmets cramp my style," thread and go to page 47. As of now, that's the real last page. But it tells you there is a page 48. But if you click trying to go to page 48, it just reloads 47. I've seen this on several threads that have lots of pages.

On the new posts page it still doesn't tell you how many pages there are in total. It says "Page 1 of" instead of say "page 1 of 10"

Also on the post a new thread page, after the subject box, the next tab stop should be the main edit box - a minor niggle.

If there are a lot of soft deleted posts, the page count will be off. When we delete a post, we only soft delete it in case we need to reference it later or the poster makes the case sufficiently well that it needs to be restored. If we hard delete, it's gone. If we remove them from the count, then we'd have to rebuild the forum database to restore a single post.

Not a major problem but at the top and bottom of the search results page it says "Page 1 of" and not "Page 1 of 10"
