PLaces to take a break on Long Island
This has been a great first year riding. What I have come to realize is that the members of the bike club I belong to always have their favorite deli or pastry shop to stop in for a mid ride break.
Where do you like to stop for a break? Do you have a route that includes it?
Post the location(Shop name and address) and route(if available) you take that happens to take you past.
Might be interesting to see what 'stops' we make.
thanks

If your club rides ever encompass the Bethpage Bikeway, check out the Coliseum Kitchen at 1660 Old Country Rd, just about 1/2 mile east of the bikeway. It's one of those gigantic delis with all kinds of food, including pizza, salads, sandwiches, and much more. I particularly like it for the outdoor seating.

I've been on group rides where they stop for a full breakfast. I personally will have a gel or a bar and some water. I can't see burning 2000 calories, only to consume 2500 on the ride.
The bakery in Kings Park is a popular place.

I really like the Cabana Latina Southampton on Montauk Highway a couple miles east of the Shinnecock Canal. But on a sunny day I may prefer the Green Door Cafe on Shinnecock Rd, a few miles west of the Cabana Latina.
A good restful stop is Horton Point Lighthouse.

I too have seen club rides that stop for a full lunch. One of the LIBC rides stopped for pizza in Bayville or at a Mexican place in Syosset. I was like "you have to be kidding" as they would then get back on the bike after an hour and ***** and moan all the way back to the lot.
If riding the LIE service road, there's a good deli at Horace Harding and Bates Blvd. accessed if riding west on the service road.
Miller Ridge Inn has a good little bakery at the shops, can get hot soup as well, which is good in the winter. We usually get into the lot from the development behind.
If out in Greenlawn, at Manor Rd. and Jericho is a good bagel shop in the strip mall. We stop here when doing a BP to Kings Park route.

I remember some LIBC/GBSC weekday rides in the early & mid '80's would feature a full, sit down, menus and waitresses breakfast at the Tides in Bayville. Pancakes, French toast, etc. I was a youngster and most of the guys were older, many retired. They still kicked my butt.
Arata's Deli on Sea Cliff Ave. is popular but on the pricey side and the service is sometimes a bit brusque. In that village I prefer B.Brown's on Roslyn Ave. across from the firehouse. In Northport the Copenhagen bakery is nice. Watch out for the old trolley tracks still embedded in the pavement. As OldnSlow mentioned the Park bakery at Pulaski & 25A in Kings Park is popular.
Fly2High, where have you been riding?

The MPBC takes me predominantly along the Gold Coast of LI. Unfortunately, I think we tend to do a small sample of the available rides in the area because of familiarity and because they like the mid ride snack. I was looking to find new places and try to formulate new routes to try.
For me, all this year we tend to hit Crab Meadow (And stop in Northport for a bite), Northport directly, LIE service road, Roslyn, Locust Valley RR (some deli just off of it), Stony Brook ( a pizza and deli place - forget the name) and that is about it.
Now, MPBC does not post cue sheets like Huntington does. Huntington has a ton of cue sheets but the 'rest stops' are not always listed. I was thinking of taking them and merging the places people suggest into some of the roads they do and change the starting point to Bethpage lybrary.

When I was marshalling the MS Ride out of Dowling College back in the early 2000's, there was a place just before the water in Bluepoint called "Flo's Luncheonette" that had outdoor tables and a real welcoming vibe for cyclists. I'm not sure if they are still there, but I'd say that's a great place for a group ride to stop in the nicer weather.

2 more.....Gold Coast Deli on Mill Dam Rd in Huntington Bay (a frequent MPBC stop) and Good2Go on Woodbury Rd. a bit south of Huntington village. I went by both of them today.
