Mass Bike Ride 9/15 to Protest Spike in Cyclist Deaths, Hit-and-Runs

WHAT: Mass Bike Ride to Demand Safe Passage for Cyclists and Pedestrians

WHERE: Riders gather at E. 59th St and Fifth Ave and finish at Washington Square Park

WHEN: Thursday, September 15, Riders meet at 6pm and depart at 6:30

WHO: Transportation Alternatives, Families For Safe Streets, Right of Way, Black Girls Do Bike, Kidical Mass BK, WE Bike NYC, Recycle-A-Bicycle, 5BBC, Bike New York, Time's Up, CHEKPEDS, the NYC Mechanical Gardens Bike Coop, Get Women Cycling, the New York Bicycle Messenger Foundation, the Century Road Club Association, the New York Cycle Club and Bicycle Habitat.

"Riders will demand that the Mayor take immediate action to fund and fast-track protected bike lanes and safeguarded pedestrian crossings for all 446 Vision Zero Priority Corridors and Intersections. Nearly half of this year’s cycling fatalities have taken place in areas designated as "Priority" locations in the City’s Pedestrian Safety Action Plans.

When advocates ride together to demand safe passage for cyclists and pedestrians, they will be led by the most vulnerable users of the streets -- new cyclists, teens, older New Yorkers, and kids. 6-year-old Galit Gordon, who will be coming from Brooklyn to join the ride, said, "We need safer streets so that no one gets run over by cars and trucks and so kids can ride their bikes to school.”"

On Facebook over 1,100 are going; with 1,600 maybe. This is not counting folks who aren't on FB.

A request for marshals was sent out by Transportation Alternatives:
"If you are interested in marshaling please send an e-mail to Transportation
Alternatives Senior Organizer Luke Ohlson at luke.ohlson@transalt.org."

Tomorrow, 1,000 people will bike down 5th Avenue from 59th Street to Washington Square Park. We will fill the street. We will be heard. Here’s everything you need to know.
1. Meet at the Fountain of Pomona at East 59th Street and 5th Avenue in Manhattan.
2. We are gathering at 6 pm. The ride leaves at 6:30 pm sharp.
3. You should wear yellow and bring your bike. Don’t forget front and back lights and a bell for your bike.
4. This is a peaceful and non-violent protest ride.
5. Obey all traffic laws at all times and stop at all red lights, unless directed otherwise by an NYPD officer.
6. Go slow and look out for the people riding with you. We’re all in this together.
7. If you lose the ride, regroup at Washington Square Park.
8. The hashtags that everyone is using are: #RideTogether #Sept15

I'll be attending as a marshal.

Best of luck to y'all for trying to get some movement going on this.

Atlanta is in the middle of a cycling boon for the city, so the Mass rides have really become more of a rolling party right now, with nothing really to be "*****y" about.

Yeah, I wish you luck, too. However, I think the UN is in session in Manhattan this week, so the cops are likely to be on the edge. I hope this rally doesn't take on a Critical Mass vibe and end up getting some people hurt.

Even though the reason for this protest ride was very serious; folks had a lot fun.
NYPD was protecting the rear of the ride; not sure if they were also in front. We
took over 5th ave; with marshals blocking cross streets. Some drivers honked and
yelled; but most just waited till we passed.
