NYPD writing stop sign tickets in washington heights

NYPD is on a stop sign (and probably red light) initiative in Washington Heights. Sounded precinct specific.

Yesterday they were writing stop sign tickets at 177th and Pinehurst with an unmarked car.

Lying POS told me "7 bicyclists were injured at that stop sign in the past 4 weeks". Sure thing.

Anyhow, stop at the stop sign when you see the marked or unmarked car and signal your appreciation for the value they are adding to society as you see fit.

This is a first for me...I never heard of any bicyclist getting a ticket for such a thing. Hope it doesn't ketch on.

While I think there are far more productive ways for a police officers to spend their time. Calling him a "lying pos" is going a little over the top. Unless of course you spent the last 4 weeks 24 hrs a day on that corner.

No, POS is accurate.

The NYPD just loves to run crackdowns on bikes for easy infractions. Rolling thru a stop sign is easy, as the bikes aren't going that fast, you step out of your un-marked and just flag down the errant cyclist. SO much easier then having to actually chase down a motorist for the same thing.

This is SOP for the NYPD. There's endless posts over here on this subject. Commuting, Touring and Ride Reports

And before folks get their panties in a twist over such blatant dis-respect for the police, note that where I live, in Nassau County, NY, the county PD officers are seemingly less inclined to need to stop cyclists for BS infractions. The NYPD on the other hand, seemingly never got the message that after a few thousand miles of bicycle infrastructure installed over the last decade, the idea was to ENCOURAGE cycling, not make it obviously more difficult by citing for BS offences (No bell ?, really ?, or write a ticket for not riding in the bike lane because I parked my cruiser in the bike lane ?.). Like I said, the beat cops know that bikes are easy pickin's.

Discretion ?, not in their vocabulary.
