Gowanus, Brooklyn, to Northport Long Island
Considering a ride to Northport this weekend. (Only have to get there; I have a ride back to Brooklyn.)
Plugged the itinerary into Google, and I got this:
https://bit.ly/2dCH99F
It has me on Route 25 for a fairly long while. I'm happy to ride in city traffic, but I don't want to be on a poorly maintained semi-highway with cars irritated by my presence. Is this remotely enjoyable?
Thanks.

You're passing right by me in Woodhaven there!
There's no reason to deal with Jamaica Avenue / Jericho Turnpike. Stewart Avenue is better. That's what I take when I am visiting my mother out in Westbury.
Here is what I suggest.
Turn off of Springfield Boulevard before you get to Jamaica Avenue, at 100th Avenue; turn right to go east. Take that to 222nd Street, turn left to go north.
Then head east in a way that might seem a little herky-jerky:
* right on 95th Avenue (cross the City line at 225th Street)
* right on 239th Street
* left on Superior Road (you pass a spot where only bikes and pedestrians can continue but it's impassible for cars)
* veer left where Superior Road turns into Roger Place
* right at Adelaide Street
* left at Carnation Street just to get up to Tulip Avenue; or else cut through the parking lot behind the building, so as to get directly to Tulip Avenue
* either way, make a right at Tulip Avenue
* left at Plainfield Avenue
* right at Stewart Street; this becomes Stewart Avenue
* take Stewart Avenue all the way until it seems to end, at Cherry Valley Avenue.
* pass Cherry Valley Avenue and veer rightward onto Cathedral Avenue
* make the first left onto 7th Street
* follow 7th Street eastward and after it veers left to go north
* turn right upon rejoining Stewart Avenue
* left at Washington Avenue
* right at Westbury Avenue
And rejoin the route from your map.
As I mentioned, I do a similar route when I go out to my mother's.
Of course, the really uncomfortable part will come later, as you hit the hills in Woodbury. That's why I really dislike the North Shore, especially as compared to the wonderfully flat South Shore.
One interesting thing to see on Woodbury Road at the Nassau-Suffolk border is the historical marker saying that that border was once an international border between New Netherland (the Nassau side) and New England (the Suffolk side), as defined by the 1650 Treaty of Hartford.

Wow, very thoughtful of you. This is excellent. Thanks so much.
And ... hills? I'm riding fixed. Although I did an insane century in Vermont/New Hampshire once. (Actually, until the very end, it was the downhills that kill you on a fixie.)
