I will be at the Bloomin Metric too....
I also want to try the Tour of the Litchfield Hills this year too...been on my "to do" list for years.
I've done the RT 202 run from Litchfield, around Waramaug and then home via RTs 47, 199, 317 (Hills!), 6, & finally RT 67 back to Oxford....it's one of my favorite rides.

They ain't called " The Litchfield Hills" for nothin'!!!!!!!!! My tandem partner Denise and I hammer our 55 lbs Univega Sport thru Warren then back roads to Milton ,Litchfield and sometime Goshen before coming down Rte 202 back to Waramaug. Great training for the Bloomin' Metric in May. If you get onto some of the back roads up in the hill towns , there are some great views.....and fast down hills!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't posted in a while. I'm still riding my Univega Trail Hybrid. I did manage to get rid of my Dept. Store FauxMTB that needed fixing. Someone was nice enough to take it to Norwalk, where it will be donated to the CT Bike Project.
I needed a new chain installed on the hybrid, and the folks from Dr Mike's Bike Service came out to the house and fixed me up. They saved my butt, as I had no transportation other than the bike for about 5 days last week, and would have missed 3 days of work. I suppose I could have walked 6 miles to the bus stop in the morning, and another 6 on the way back, but riding it made so much more sense!
Doing about 10-12 miles today. It is 40ish, and a bit rainy, but nothing like last Thursday night's soaking.

Hey all,
The Litchfield Hills have finally made me switch to a compact. I need to replace my cassette too, but I was wondering if 34x23 would be enough to get me around. I'm currently running 39x23 and can barely muster 70rpm on the steepest climbs.
So, 34x23, or should I go down to a 34x26?

34x23 should be good I think.....again, it all depends on what your current condition is and how used to riding hills you are. I have a compact myself but I run 50/38 for chainrings and an 11-28 for a cassette. I never liked the big jump from the 50 to the 34. My current gearing is more than adaquate for 99% of the riding I do and I do have a 36t chainring I can pop on if circumstances dictate too..

Hey there. East Haven here. Just started riding consistently in March. Have been mostly on an older Specialized MTB with some hybrid tires. Typical rides of 10-25 miles with some 40-50's tossed in every now and then. Don't really have any normal 'routes', kind of just see where the ride takes me. Spend a lot of time on 146 as my house is basically where it begins in EH (did 146 to Hammonassett today, 48 miles I think was the total). Also spend time on the canal trail. If you see me huffing and puffing on my new bike pictured below (freshly built by me with no prior wrenching experience) feel free to say hello. I'll be the guy taking a cigarette break after 20 miles.

Steve from Haddam reporting - brand new here, been riding just around my house mainly (Rt. 154, 148, 81). I've gone down to Old Saybrook a couple times too, which is nice as long as you stay off Main St.

Hey all - ex New Yawker here currently living in Norwalk, CT. Been out exploring the local roads a bit (mostly in Darien). Anyone know any nice, low-traffic routes around?

Here's part of a pretty cool route I used from the Bridgeport Ferry terminal to a specific address in Darien. I snipped off the bit past the last stretch of Rt. 1, though. This route took me by some very nice homes and water views. Check it out and adapt it any way you think you'd like.
Ferry Access Road south, becomes RR Avenue. Follow RR Avenue east 1.5 miles
Turn left on Fairfield Avenue and go 4.5 miles to Pequot
Turn left on Pequot and go 1.5 miles to fork. Bear left onto Beachside Avenue
1.2 miles and turn right onto New Creek
Quick left onto Greens Farms Road
2.5 miles and bear right/straight onto Bridge Street
½ mile, cross water and turn left on Riverside Ave
Go under 95 and make right onto Charles St/Park St (Rt.136)
At fork, go left on Park.
Bear left onto Sagatauk Ave (becomes Winfield St)
2.25 miles to East Ave (E. Norwalk train station)
Left on East Avenue to Van Zant Street
Right on Van Zant and go ½ mile to Ft. Point Street/Washington St
Left on Fort Point, 7 miles to Flax Hill Road

Sound Cyclists has a lot of routes and their Fri Night rides from the Darien train station are popular.

hi there, i live in the nw part of the state, west of Hartford. the places i ride most - nepaug state forest, west hartford reservoir, nassahegon state forest, tyler mill, grayville, millers pond, middlesex, trumbull. woodsy technical singletrack.

I organize a Meetup.com group, "Hartford Area Road Cyclists", 185 members, in our second year, and now that things are winding down, I'm doing some administrative/Marketing work. Here's the link:

We promote safe "sport touring", (and I mean safe, I don't mess around) . We've posted some great routes with accurate cue sheets. Our rides are generally "social pace", 14-17 MPH. We've done Barkhamstead a couple times with small groups, it's an awesome ride. Don't let it scare you , stay positive and focused.
I've also recently mapped out an easier one , a classic called Ted's Tour De Manure. (We took the CTBIKEROUTES cue sheet and put it on a map, makes it more tangible, I think) I may ride that on Saturday if the weather is not too brutal. It's an incredibly beautiful ride, and goes through lots of farmland, dairy country, Granville MA etc.
After about oct 23, riders started to hole up, though, but I do ride year round.
Feel free to join us, it's free, Meetup is pretty cool, they also do a lot of other activities, hiking etc. I am having some success with proposing dragging some of our riders out for some cross country skiing and MT biking at the West Hartford reservoirs, which is a fabulous recreational resource.
It's a private group, you fill out a profile with a picture. Preference is given to those who are "real" ... write more than three words, post a picture (you don't need a face pic, I understand that concern) and are civil. And you must actually live in CT to join. Currently, most of our smaller "hometown" rides are closer to Hartford County, but we do get over to Litchfield and the Berkshires and are branching out. It's going to take time. We also function as a "refferal hub" for the bigger rides, charity rides, shop rides, etc. to help the cycling community.
I don't put up with lurkers and spammers, so if you are an emotionally mature individual who likes to ride, join us (you don't have to be Lance Armstrong) Please mention you saw my post here if you join.
I'm proud to say we were crash free this entire year. No close calls either. We use hand signals, we're friendly to motorists, and pay attention out there.
I'm also looking for riders with some group leader experience, Just one ride a month. If you do two, you get a medal of honor. I can't do it all myself. It's a lot of work, and our participation rate is about what I expected for an event site like this. If you are looking for a "hammer-fest," this is not the place.
I'm trying to get some paying sponsors going, so I can at least put a couple bucks in your pocket for the day if you are helping with organizing. I can't guarantee this at the moment, but I could sure use more riders who've been in the saddle enough and can help fix a flat, etc. Being able to keep people calm is another skill I value. Of course newbies are welcome too!

Heya all. I live in Madison, and I've been doing the Guilford Thursday Night ride dusring the season and a lot of Sunday riding with a crew in Chester the past couple of years. I like all kinds of riding and I try to fake my way through a couple of Cat 4 road races and a few criteriums every year.

The Drive Side is Within
Milford/West Haven rider here.
I ride a LOT along through New Haven-West Haven-Milford-Devon-Stratford-Bridgeport, mostly as commuting or other transportation. Lots of night/evening riding, to and from church choir, etc.
I rode the Elm City Cycling Century in June '10. I really want to get into group rides, but my wife works Tuesday and Thursday nights and I have church commitments, so that's been out.
Any other CT urban riders out there?

Right now 99% of my riding is on the Farmington Canal Trail between home here in Hamden and Cheshire. In the spring I'll venture back out on the roads again.
I did a lot of riding about 21 yrs ago, Bloomin' metric and a a few centuries even, now I can't stand a road bike and ride a Rockhopper, love it!

Burlington rider here. Currently training for the 2011 Tour of the Litchfield hills & 2012 Mt. Greylock century.

Just registered for the site but I'm from Milford and do a lot of riding out of Tony's Bikes and Sports. They do group rides on Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Most guys are willing to ride other times as well. Usually 10+ on any given Saturday with newbie friendly routes as I just started road riding this summer!

Hey guys! Guilford rider here!
First post here since I got into training relatively recently (since September; it's for an engineering school project). Since I've started to get into shape I wanted to see who was around during the season for some group riding. I'm thinking about racing and I'd love to meet the community as well as get some experience in the peloton.
Also, if anyone is wanted to sell their moderately nice lugged steel road frame please let me know! I'm trying to swap my Cannondale R1000 frame for something more comfortable for training. I'd be interested in 56-59cm sizes.
Looks like a nice forum! I found this place through SprinterDellaCasa's videos... been learning from them for a couple days now, great stuff!

Good to see this thread is active again. I was just loitering and decided I'd add a question:

In the past, I have used Lordship Road to bring me to the water, but I always seem to start heading north again way too soon. While driving through the area in a car about a year ago, I convinced my wife to let me detour down that way to try to find the ultimate waterside route, but it got a bit complicated, as some of the connections between roads weren't negotiable with a car.
I'm hoping to head up that way again this summer and would like to have the perfect waterside route all the way to Milford. I usually stay at one of the dumps on Rt. 1, near I-95 and the Post Mall.
Can anybody help?

You are in a great place for riding. I lived in Guilford for a couple of years, moving to Western Massachusetts last summer. Go introduce yourself to Marc at the Broken Spoke in Madison. It's a great small shop and he seems to know everyone in the area. He built my Pacer for me last spring. I'm sure he can help you on your search for the right bike as well.
That is a beaut! The brooks saddle and saddlebag really make it for me. I'm actually going to throw modern components on mine so I can train on it, but I can appreciate a nice steelie like that. Surly makes very nice frames, I've seen a bunch as I scout around on eBay. You would probably like my dad's Katakura Silk with lacquered corktape and twine. So beautiful!
Thanks for the tip, I've been into a couple shops in New Haven but haven't checked out Broken Spoke. I'll let ya know!

Yeah, Google Maps is always there, but as long as we have this wicked cool forum, I prefer to reach out to real people for some heart & soul recommendations. Google Maps can show you how to get from Point A to Point B, but it can't tell you that there's a street with some really nasty dogs who like to chase bicycles, or that the old man who lives at house #27 is known for inviting bikers inside for a pancake breakfast.

Yeah, Google Maps is always there, but as long as we have this wicked cool forum, I prefer to reach out to real people for some heart & soul recommendations. Google Maps can show you how to get from Point A to Point B, but it can't tell you that there's a street with some really nasty dogs who like to chase bicycles, or that the old man who lives at house #27 is known for inviting bikers inside for a pancake breakfast.
