Harry: How long is this tour, 300-400 miles? If you plan on doing 100+ miles per day it's doable in 3 very hard days. I did those numbers last year(330 in 3 days+a few hours) and can tell you it is rough. You drag yourself into your sleeping bag at night. I find 60-80 miles a day is a good number if you are hauling your stuff and want to enjoy the camp a bit. Beside Barry will be hauling a cooler of beer for us
Folks: start looking at your calendars, start building marital equity, this trip is going to happen.
Time: I say lets look into spring(hopefully dry), and before the bugs become an issue. April/May ish. It ain't that far away.
That ACA route is 387 miles, if I recall correctly -- I checked it on their Web site. I agree, though I've never toured, 100 miles seems a lot, especially if you ever want to get off the bike to check out any of the cool historical sites you're pedaling past. (Well, for us mere mortals, anyway -- Isaias could crank it out with a smile and time left over to whip up a fully-illustrated travelogue. )

I say we recruit Isaias as our mule on this camping trip, if we can't slow him down with 100 lbs of gear then there is no hope for us.

    Charlie,
Yes the possibilities are endless. I had routed a trip that uses the AC map but then heads south into VA towards Williamsburg VA, nice area for biking, heading back west towards Richmond. Can always train home but Amtrak sucks for bikes. I did a tour in VA last year with my friend Bennett. We did Skyline, a couple of those F?#$%! gaps, down to Harrisonburg to Charlottesville and then back up to his farm in Sperryville.
After doing that I thought a pan Virginia tour might be good, mountains to sea, but maybe we should start with the tidewater. I had also thought of riding north over the bay and down the shore, but yes the Bay Bridge is an issue. Stick our thumbs out and cash to hitch a ride over the bridge? I'll save my cross country hitchhiking tales of my youth for another time.

I say we pick up the beer as we go, save Barry's legs.

Wouldn't work with my Blackberry, more to do with my service, Verizon. I was bummed.

Maxine and Charlie, I agree that 100 mile days kind of ruin the tour. I did that in Quebec and by the time I got to Burlington I was wiped out. 50-70 perhaps, depending on the load. Need to time to drink

Bah! You guys could always go the way I do to Ocean City ( http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path...d-via-Delaware ). Actually, you could stay on the western side of the eastern shore, go down the middle, or ride along the Atlantic. Once on the DELMARVA peninsula, you can go anywhere on it with lots of low traffic roads at your disposal.

BTW--There's campgrounds at Indian River and on Route 50 just before OCMD. And, as Max stated, campgrouds on Assateague.

Another option is the Severna Park Peloton Bike Club ( http://www.severnaparkpeloton.org )has a tour to the eastern shore where they have a method of getting over the Bay Bridge. They probably have information on their website regarding what they do to conquer the bridge.

Here's a route I began roughing up a few months ago. I think an alternate to the Bay bridge is to go west over to the ferry. You may all know Maryland better than me though NR is certainly right that the eastern shore is pretty tame on traffic, aside from Rt.50.

I never finished it but I think I had Elk Neck as the first night and Henlopen as second. Those distances are very doable unloaded but not sure it would be touring pace.

wow lots of choices! Love it. I like the idea of taking a ferry. Don't care which one, Whites, Tangiers, Smith Island. Don't know why, just seems like an interesting twist. We need to determine how many days we want to tour. Then multiply that by (about) 60 miles per day to determine which loop. Do we want to drive then bike? Or just bike from home.
Barrys loop looks like a 3 day tour and could include Whites Ferry.
The Adventure tour seems to be about 5 or more days.
NRs is 2 days if you ride like him
Bay bridge is "hitch"-able. Depending on our numbers we can either hitch a ride to the Eastern shore or(if lots of us) set up(pay) a shuttle. Just a thought.
Harry's Touring Virginia, mountain to shore has a nice 'concept" to it.

How long do folks want to tour? Once we set a time then we can set the route.

I'm into it. Let's decide on how long and when. I would prefer a ferry option to the Bay Bridge.

I also agree with Barry on short tours, that's how this thread got started. I would be interested in an overnight "shakedown" ride. There are some very nice state parks in southern PA, or could even be closer, just to test loads etc.

There is a thread on the BBC list serve about riding down to the inauguration. It is something I had thought about and mentioned on our monument ride. A bike club from Philadelphia is doing it. I'm pretty sure I will do it. If I don't meet up with that Philly group then I may take the light rail to BWI- just to possibly shave off some time to get down there in time.

Let me know if any are interested.

While you folks are thinking about these trips, some of you may want to think about riding with me to OCMD this year for July 4th. I wouldn't mind the company.

We could ride with some of the locals that I know down there--well a particular local and she rounds up others to ride with. These rides are fairly fast paced, though. Doesn't mean we can't get out and do some touring-paced rides. We could go to Assateague or even ride down into Virginia one day.

Let me know if you're interested.

Josh, I know that you can plan a route in BiM, but I'm not sure that it will give you turn-by-turn directions.

I know that VZNavigator does not have that feature.

I'll look further into the BiM thing, but for the price, I'm almost sure it won't be there, either.
