NR, You don't sound so good, David really doesn't sound good and the two cyclists who where doored in Annapolis on Bike to Work Day also doesn't sound so good. I'm now feeling ill myself, too much junk going on in a short period of time.

Thanks, Barry.

I'm doing better. The nausea has passed and I was able to get a couple slices of cold pepperoni/mushroom/extra cheese pizza down. I really need to eat some more. Fruit would be good.... if I had any.

Peeing clear now, so my hydration is catching up.

I'm feeling well enough to be motivated to work on the bike getting it ready for tomorrow. That's usually a good sign.

LOL, glad you are feeling better but I wounder why after reading that do I want to offer some words of advice? You do know the key to getting iron legs has nothing to do with having an iron stomach right? j/k

joshandlauri 05-17-09 08:27 AM

NR, sorry to hear about David and you. Hope everyone gets better.

Best of luck in your race.

NoRacer 05-17-09 11:53 AM

David emailed Phil and Phil relayed that David stated that he did not incur any broken bones or, even after losing consciousness, a concussion. His face is bruised in spots, but he said it looks worse than it feels.

----
My race, as predicted, did not go well. I finished, at least.

Here's the BiM recording, which is missing the 15 miles of the race, but the race is represented in the Powermeter data in the Notes section:

NR, your one tough guy,no way I could have had a day like you did Sat and still race the next day, Kudos to you for that.

I saw on sat ride you hit 60mph ? is that for real or a fluke, where at?

Weekend info for me: Friday a ton of hiking at patapsco w.baby on back,Saturday Night found a Adams trail a bike for $50 on CL, Woke up Sunday and took our new "bike train" for a ride we must be 18' long), the baby did great having big brother pull her while I pulled him, he was scared at first thinking he was go to fall over but he was ok (NOT PEDALING), pulling 100lbs worth of kids, bike and trailers is a lot of work BTW. We rode at Eastern Regional Park, tons of comments and people saying "look at that guy" "I like that set up", windy as crap out.

Working on getting the kids prepped for tour dem parks, little by little.

HC203 05-17-09 04:17 PM

New workout-Pull heavy ass tandem with heavy child over 140 miles. Love my dear boy but I swear I just hauled a small U-haul trailer from Rehoboth. Saturday was hard, lots of wind, and we are a big target for crosswinds. The workout wasn't necessarily anaerobic but rather a slow low aerobic weight lifting session. Phew. With that said we did have our moments of extreme momentum.
Camped out last night to the sound of rain on our tent and it was coming down in Buckets at Chesapeake College this morning, left my rain gear in my wife's van so improvised with trash bags. But once we got shuttled across the Bay Bridge it was cloudy but no rain.
Most of todays 40 miles was on the B&A then familiar Hollins Ferry etc. I saw the racers warming up at Patterson Park as we rolled by to the headquarters of Moveable Feast but I had enough exposure and rolling around on a tandem without a passenger seemed weird, but certainly much lighter.

veloellen 05-17-09 07:16 PM

Congrats Harry. Jimmy will concur - heavy ass tandem, not yet a heavy assed kid - a recipe for getting your ass kicked! We drove past your house today on the bikes - not like we expected to see you home but its on the way.
Barry, saw an organized ride today - not sure what ride it was though. We ran into some riders coming down Lake to Falls. On Cross COuntry Blvd we saw some road markingsany idea?
Bike Jam was fun! Overcast cool day - no rain in Baltimore - some fast times.

Thanks, Josh.

Every once in awhile the GPS picks up these outlandishly high speed points. I trust the spilt data more, because it represents speed over a mile.

The max speed that I descended according to the iBike was 49.4 mph.

Btw, if you keep hauling this kids around, you're gonna get as strong as an ox. Same for Harry. :thumb:

Need to ride with you and Jim sometime.

That's what I kept telling myself all weekend. It was weird, couldn't really get into a high aerobic zone very easily, the load was just so heavy that I needed to just maintain this low slow churn, or higher spin.
We did actually manage to make some of the descents pay off on the ride into Baltimore.
Last night as my wife cooked a fabulous post ride dinner (back on diet today) I was moving very slowly as my son was dancing around with his brothers, somebody had a bit too much energy left over.
Next heavy load, hauling my 5 year old on the Tour Dem Parks. That should actually be easier.

joshandlauri 05-18-09 04:37 PM

Tour dem parks, does anyone know the route for the 10 mile and 25 mile rides? I looked and couldn't find it. I want to do the 25 depending on the kids. Also is the 25 miles route usually kid/trailer friendly?

Also got a sitter for the M & M ride memorial day!! WOO HOO

The Human Car 05-18-09 06:03 PM

Tour dem Parks: 10-14 mile route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/TdemP2009short
All trail or closed roads, very kid/trailer friendly.

There will be some changes on this but it is the basic 25 mile route: http://www.bikely.com/maps/bike-path/TdP09med

To me one of the points of bike events is you can get away with pulling a trailer a lot easier then on solo rides, anyway this route has lots of sidewalks if that helps any. Though I will note the MLK sidewalk is really bumpy but it is less then a mile.

I was out riding with my son tonight, amazing how many ass hole drivers in Rodgers Forge, I really have to let it roll off before I beat up some dad in front of his kids, I'll say no more. Anyhow, he seems to really be enjoying being on his own bike rather than the tandem. I said we would do Tour Dem Parks but I'm not so sure it's safe. I did it last year with the tag along trailer and was pretty tense at times, crossing into Montebello, etc. I would love to do it to get him out on his own but there may be better options. I just don't trust Baltimore drivers. Do you think there will be enough riders on the 26 mile route to create a presence?
I think I'll move to Portland, or Boulder, or Davis, or Chicago, etc. Somebody, please tell me it aint that bad.

Last years ride was hot as heck - there was a 40 something mile ride last year that we cut off at 41 after taking a wrong turn. I was starting to feel the effects of the heat and we tried to head back to the start through some gawd awful neighborhood!!!! I enjoy the ride - we've been doing it since its inception.
On the longer ride last year we usually saw a rider in front or behind us but its limited to 1000 riders so its no Tour du Port ride. Like you- I believe in safety in numbers. The shorter the course, the more bodies you'll see. Even though my husband is MUCH stronger than I on the bike, the tandem somewhat evens the score. I always ride behind the guys for safety reasons (and for one major reason - I"M SLOW).

HC203 05-21-09 10:29 AM

Anybody ridden from Gettysburg to New Freedom (NCR) Are those main roads. Would 116 Hanover rd. to Bloomingrove be reasonably low traffic?

NoRacer 05-21-09 12:41 PM

I'm playing "hooky" tomorrow (paid time off). I don't know where I'm riding, but it will be long and flat to save my legs for this ride by DC RAND on Saturday:

Are you an ultramasochist? After popping over Big Flat in your big
chain ring last Saturday did you mutter to yourself "Is that all there
is?" Then this ride is for you, and your presence is respectfully
requested. We promise a plethora of pulse-raising ascents to complement
the beautiful scenery. In addition to several major climbs including
Middlepoint, Park Central, and PenMar, we will be "exploring" a "new"
road that Neal Becker discovered during his winter wanderings. There
are several lesser climbs, too, but there's also some mellow terrain in
the Cumberland Valley before and after lunch. There is a brief unpaved
stretch on Eylers Valley Rd -- try it, you'll like it! 100 miles, with
several optional shortcuts.

Directions to the ride start:
MONOCACY MIDDLE SCHOOL, 8009 OPOSSUMTOWN PIKE, FREDERICK, MARYLAND
21702 From D.C. Beltway (I-495), take I-270 north 31 miles to Frederick.
Continue north on US15 3.7 miles. Take Exit 16, Motter Ave exit (sign
for Frederick Community College). Turn RIGHT at the traffic light onto
Opossumtown Pike. In about 1.5 mi. turn RIGHT into Monocacy Middle
School parking lot (just after Frederick Community College on the left).

Sunday is up in the air, too.

And, then there's Monument to Monument on Memorial Day, right?! Bob? (see it in cuesheetcentral)

You could ride up to Gettysburg on Sunday and escort Bennett, it's what I would like to do but probably won't. He's doing a three day Memorial Day weekend tour. Arlington to Chambersburg on Saturday, CBurg through Gettysburg to New Freedom and the NCR on Sunday to my place, then on Monday from here to Annapolis and west to the metro. I told him about the Monument Ride but he said he wants to do Annapolis and he'll also be on a loaded bike. I'll probably ride with him to Annapolis or at least part way.

Thanks Harry (and sorry , Bennett) but, I think this is what my weekend will look like--others welcome:

I'll be riding out of the Park & Ride in Chesapeake City--wheels down 8am for a long and flat ride toward Dover via Delaware routes 15 and 9. It definitely will be pancake flat, but it could be a little windy. This is a "no-drop" ride (primarily because I have no cue sheet). We stay together from start to finish.

========
Then, for Saturday, there's this DC Randonneur ride out of Thurmont, MD:

SATURDAY, MAY 23, 2009

"MAY YOUR PAIN BE EXQUISITE," starting from Monocacy Middle School in
Frederick, Maryland. MEETING TIME 7:30 a.m.

Are you an ultramasochist? After popping over Big Flat in your big

========
Sunday's DC Randonneur century:

SUNDAY, MAY 24, 2009

"CYPRESS SWAMP CENTURY," starting from Southern High School, Harwood,
Maryland. MEETING TIME 8:00 a.m.

This is one of our favorite southern Maryland rides, featuring lunch
at Stoney's on Broomes Island (where the crab cakes are SUBLIME).
Unless you're in a rush, there should be time to visit the Battle Creek
Cypress Swamp after lunch and stroll along the boardwalk through the
prehistoric bald cypress trees. (See http://calvert-county.com/cypress.htm)
The terrain is gently rolling, with a few hills dotting the landscape here
and there. Pretty horse farms, tobacco barns, lovely bay views, and maybe
even some peacocks!

100 miles, with short options of 64 or 84 miles. Note, however, that
the short options don't go to Stoney's. Estimated elevation gain 4,000
feet.

Directions to the ride start:
SOUTHERN HIGH SCHOOL, 4400 SOLOMONS ISLAND ROAD, HARWOOD, MARYLAND
From DC Beltway, go East on US50.
In about 11 miles, take exit 16 and go south on MD424 Davidsonville Rd.

In about 3.5 miles, cross MD214 in Davidsonville (MD424 becomes
Birdsville Rd.

In about 3 miles, go right on MD2 @T.

In about 2 miles, right into high school parking lot.
Please park in the large main parking lot, NOT in the small faculty lot.

========
Monday's Club BBC Century ride:

And, then there's the Monument to Monument Century ride on Memorial Day--a BBC club ride being led by greaterbrown (Bob). This is a century ride from Baltimore's Washington Monument to DC's Washington Monument.

Here's the ride description:

A Randonneur's Ramble from Baltimore's Washington monument to DC's Wash. monument. As you expect, roads are trafficky in and out of the cities - but they are relatively safe and well tested. In-between there'll be nice long stretches of country roads and numerous paved trails. If you want the full century, you will have to go around the block a few times.

Those new wheels? Didn't you have American Classics, something like that?

Looks like you'll have a great weekend of riding starting with that Chesapeake City ride. I'll either ride with Bennett on Sunday or Monday.

There is just something about those wheels, full kit and fenders that cracks me up. Don't get me wrong, I love practicality, it's just not something you see every day. It's the little things that are going to radically change the world and I appreciate your contribution to that.
