I think I am going to try a new route today. I am going to start night riding (once my lights arrive) since I don't seem to have time other parts of the day. I am going to try out a new route that keeps me off roads with traffic. I haven't ridden some of these yet so I don't know how hilly they are.

Funny,

Here was my ride last year.

http://trail.motionbased.com/trail/activity/896042

You should come along. It was a pretty ride and for an organized ride pretty cheap. If it isn't challenging enough you could always bike to the start :D

Or bike through town and I could pick you up on the way.

Look like one 17%er and the next higher climbs are just under 15%.

When do they do the ride?

Yea, by looking at my stats you can see that I was not prepared. But this ride was 5 weeks after my son was born last year. I am basically doing it again this year to redeem myself. I WILL BE READY

Yup! That looks good!

I'll probably do the BBC's Civil War Century again, this year, too.

Yup on my list too. Although I have several friends wanting to do the CWC and we were kicking around just doing it some weekend on our own.

I love riding at night. I am not sure about the rural roads(fast cars) but more 'cityish' roads are great. Low traffic. When you ride at night go through some of the more crowded roads and you'll be surprised. I would still stay off of roads like Reistertown, Liberty, Rt 40 etc.

Returning from a ride that started/ended in Elkridge, I rode through Baltimore with a 10w Halogen light and and rear blinky. It was scary-fun because I had never done that before. Motorists were surprised that I kept up with traffic, due mainly to the timing of the traffic control lights and the number of vehicles on the road. I "took the lane" the whole time and had no grief handed to me until I got closer to my neighborhood (friggin' red-neck-trailer-trash-Essex-Dundalkites).

Yea, I have done some riding at night before and I do enjoy it. Most of the rural roads that I would ride at night around here are very small. Some that don't even have a yellow line. Very little traffic. But no street lights so the roads are as dark as riding singletrack at night.

I splurged and got 2 lights from Dinotte. Their ultra 5 headlight and their super taillight.

I had emailed them directly with a question and ended up in an email conversation with one of their salesmen. He basically gave me a deal on both lights that I just couldn't refuse.

So those 2 lights plus my Halogen headlamp should do the trick I think.

I am also going to try and start commuting to work more, when I go into the office. That will be a ball buster though.

-D This weekend is out, I'm swamped with family stuff. Off school after Ap 5 to the 16 for spring break, so in there somewhere would be good. I just request you have mercy on me, I haven't done any serious riding yet. I'm still learning how to control this lightweight machine I've got. Did do a 45 minute ride from my house off of Main St. Reisterstown to Soldiers Delight. Pretty ride, but kind of busy at 5:00 pm. Still need to learn to look behind, drink, shift and hold my lane. :-( But there's no time like the present to get off the couch.

That's a pretty decent little ride.

No worries, my riding has been s**t. I am back close to square one. Hence the extra light purchase so I can do some 9-11pm riding.
[edit] like today. Work screwed me out of a ride.

My weekends are partially if not completely shot for much of April. My daughter son and wife all have April birthdays. 'nuff said. Well throw in easter and tomorrow afternoon trip to the tax accountant and you get the picture.

Mirror. I gave up trying to look behind in traffic. Much prefer a mirror for the quick eye glance behind.

How did you get down there from Main street? Go over Berryman's lane to Nicodemus? Yea I wouldn't want to be anywhere near Nicodemus or Deer park during rush hour.

Indyv8a 03-30-07 06:58 PM

Took Berryman's Lane to Deer Park. Deer Park Ends at Berryman's went left. I have no idea how fast I went, I'm math impaired right now. I'll probably get out the calculator and figure it out. Need to get the computer I bought on the new bike. Only had the bike since Tuesday, bought it at Catonsville BS. It might not have been quite the deal you got, but I am stoked.

BTW What kind of mirror? I'm more than seriously considering one, but could use some pointers. Really don't want the crappy velcro target one...but I'm being snob.

I have one of those stick on the helmet ones. It works quite well and pops off when I don't need it, although I tend to keep it on.

I did the BBC ride that started at Mt. View Middle School--71 miler.

Unfortunately, I only got a metric century done. After lunch, I was hammering up a hill. I thought I could have gotten up it in the 53T, but it turned up just oh so slightly enough where I needed to drop down to the 39T. When I did, all hell broke loose. I hear carnage at the RD. I stop immediately to find I had busted my chain and the RD hanger. The RD got tangled up in my spokes and pulled around the wheel for 360 degrees. Luckily I stopped when I did or I would have yanked out some spokes. Also, the RD cable housing, up by my handlebars, looked like it exploded. It was a bird's nest of wire and housing. It was pretty damned impressive. The rest of the club was behind me. They stopped to see what had happened. You should have seen the incredulous looks on their faces.

Anyway, one gentleman was able set me up in a fixed gear of 39 x 17. Another guy, who lives in the area, said he'd escort me back to the ride start using the quickest way possible. It was still about 20 miles away, though.

I found it kind of humorous on the way back, because my escort and I started dropping some of the weaker riders and after we turned off of the main ride, I started to drop my escort and another gentleman who came along with us--on the hills nonetheless! :)

Anyway, we made it back with no further problems. The bike is at Princeston Sports for repair. I should get it back Wednesday after work.

Dude that stinks. Freaky too as there is a thread over in mechanics with almost the exact same scenario.

hey everybody I rode Rock creek park this wknd w/ the wife. A very slow but beautiful ride. Made it to the cherry blossom festival. Awesome. I tend to shy away from crowds but always try to make this event. Weather, while not sunny was good. Blossoms near peak, kites flying everywhere. It was really cool to see hundreds of kites(seriously) in the air with cherry trees and wash monument in the background. WABA parked the bikes for free, good thing because i left my locks at home. If time permits over the next week try and visit. I believe WABA will be parking them again this wknd.

No Racer: bummer about the bike. I have to replace my chain and rear cass SOON. It's really slipping.
derath: really bright red lights. I want to hook up a rear red strobe light and attach to my HUGE battery that drives my headlights. You may not like this but when my kids were young I would wake up on wknds at the crack of dawn and play for 2-3 hours then return to family duties. I usually went mnt bike riding(Patasco is 1 mile from my home) or road riding. It was the best I could do and spent some excess energy.

I would love it. It is tough in the mornings though with the kids right now. I am a pretty early riser, but not early enough. It is easier to head out around 9pm and ride till 11 or so. Once the kids are asleep they are good for a long while. But in the mornings they can sometimes wake up at odd times. kinda hard to explain.

Cool about the Cherry Blossoms. Probably the best time to see them. The weather for the rest of the week is probably gonna knock them to crap.

I am off the bike for a few days at least as we have been at the hospital since midnight where my wife is attempting to deliver our baby. Expecting to be all done with that task before it gets dark. More later.

I wasn't gonna whine about this, but here it goes...
I had a 45mile ride planned for last Saturday, but cancelled because some other folks I ride with decided to ride on Sunday. (My TNT group). I was excited about gettting back together for a long ride in Howard county. Anyway, I got an email on Saturday night that the Sunday ride would be cancelled because of rain. I was bummed, but since it was supposed to rain, I decided to sleep in a little and got up the next morning at 8:30 to find an email from the same person saying that they decided at last minute to go anyway!!!
Well - I made it worse by not riding either day. Now I'm kicking myself for losing the mileage.

Oh Well - I'll have to make it up this week somewhere.

Cheers
Thanks for listening
