Barry and I had a windy little ride down to Annapolis for a quiche and corn chowder on monday. Nearly got blasted off the severn river bridge by the gusts. My new toy, the Trek 1600, was smooth and comfy the whole time. Love it. (too many logos on this bike though. sheesh, Trek/Bontrager needs to calm down with sticking their name on every conceivable inch of bike. I mean, I bought the bike didn't I?)

It was also dark for us when we got back towards town and thankfully, Barry had some spare lights/reflectors for me. The craziest part was coming back into the hornets nest of Ravens fans. I'm still seeing purple camo.

Thanks for the monday jaunt, Barry. I hope your boss wasn't mad you took the day off.

The ride out of Annapolis was so crazy with the wind and leaves blowing from everywhere and in my face but it was a great ride.

The Ravens fans were nuts, it looked to me someone was charging people to illegally park on the Gwynns Falls Trail. I made some phone calls and reported the problem after we parted ways in Hamden. I almost feel sorry for the people who paid money to have their car towed away. I also found out that the gas station on Russell & Haines St was charging people to park on the trail behind their station at some point in the past.

Great ride, loved those invisible hills (wind.)

Rode from Pierce Mill in D.C. to Sugarloaf Mountain today:

    http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v2...slideshow=true

Had yet another fall during the descent on one of the switchbacks of Sugarloaf--hit some black ice. Wet leaves may have contributed as well. I didn't destroy any clothing this time, just left a little skin. :-(

Well if it makes you feel any better riding home on Friday coming down the hill on Bellemore (behind Joe’s Bike Shop) the road was just starting to ice up. I had enough traction to stay upright but not enough traction to slow down. So I decided to bail out and I executed a perfect fall and roll off my bike into some soft grass and snow. No harm to me or the bike.

Wow! I'm glad you didn't get hurt--or the bike. Good thinking on your part. Some people panic and "freeze", figuratively speaking.

Better to bail out on Bellemore than Falls Road.

Tentative: the weekend after Christmas some of us are planning to do the whole NCR/Heritage Trail ~85 miles. I can’t say what the pace of the group will be but it should be in the 12-16mph range. Just a heads up if there is any interest.

How about the C&O and let's go to Pittsburg! <just kidding>

You should post about the Maryland Transportation questionnaire here.

Cool! I've often thought of doing this, just never seemed to get around to it. Would it be a one-day trip?

Hey folks It's been a long time since I posted here. Hope all is well. I've been swamped w/ family duties of late. I've only been commuting on the bike, hardly any rec riding. Might not make 4K in this years totals. Need a long and then only maybe.
NoRacer, seems as if you've been laying down a little skin on local roads. Looks as if you are healing well. Barry, always the bicyclist advocate(I have contacted my reps and MDOT) and I see you are trying to lay a skin like NoRacer. Wish I could have joined you and Greaterbrown for your Annapolis jaunt. The ride to York interest me, keep us posted.
    Keep pedaling. Charlie
PS I just got a new (to me)commuter for the southern portion of my commute. It's a 20 year old Trek 990, full XT, with Phil Wood hubs and Chris King headset. I'm outfitting it now and will have a second set of wheels w/ studded winter tires. Last weeks snow was a PIA with my tiny little folding bike.

Generally I find NoRacer outdoing me inspirational but in the case of laying down skin, I think I'll pass on that one.

Charley!!! Always good to hear from you.

svpatel: Welcome to our little group and BTW are you aware of MoCo Road Code? Just look at what they are purposing for master planed bike routes:

    • Urban Arterial (e.g. Arlington Road, Woodmont Ave., Wayne Ave., Fenton St.) -- 12' outside lanes, 10' inside lanes
    • Suburban Arterial (Plyers Mill Road, Montgomery Village Ave., Redland Rd., Wilson Lane) or Major Highway (Shady Grove Road, Old Georgetown Road, Georgia Ave.) -- 13' outside lanes, 11' inside lanes
    • Primary residential street with parking on both sides (Parkland Dr., Gainsborough Rd., western Bel Pre Rd.) -- 34' TOTAL roadway width, including parking area
    • Primary residential street with no parking (Needwood Rd., Good Hope Rd., Jones Mill Rd.) -- 22' TOTAL roadway width

Oh boy 2 or 3 feet of extra space for bikes.

I took the survey one of thing I said would be good is dedicated bike lanes, I commute up eastern ave, that would be nice, right now there a shoulder 2-5 feet and sometimes no shoulder and a random share the road sign. Just bike lanes all together would be nice. In the springtime and summer there a lot of people using eastern ave, I swear I see 10-15 people each way when i go to work, now in the winter I think I'm the only one.

Hey folks: Hope you commuters survived these recent AM commutes. Yesterday while windy, wasn't too bad with regards to temps. This mornings commute was friggin cold. PI Lobster mitts w/ poly liners weren't good enough. My hands were cold. Toes weren't much better. Some black ice in spots. Oh yeah my lock froze up. I used some car EtOH but the train got there before I was able to free it up. Luckily I have 2 locks. All in all, still better than a car

I leave a lock at work secured to the bike rack. Luckily, there's a little bit of cover over the rack, so the lock didn't get any moisture in it.

According to my iBike's thermometer, my ride in this morning was at an average temp of 22 degF, but with the clothing I had on, I was at the perfect temp as not to sweat so much and become chilled.

I heard 22F as well but felt even colder. I was online looking for better gloves. I'm thinking about mountaineering style.

I wear Gore-Tex gloves with glove liners. My hands and fingers were warm for the hour's worth of riding, maybe even warmer than my toes.

Could you provide some more detail on the Eastern Ave issues? Is this City or County and where you would like to see a bike lane where there is none?

The official reporting site would be: http://www.baltometro.org/content/view/289/239/

This site as an addition is also helpful for use to put pressure on the Government to do things: http://www.margieroswell.com/maps/bike.htm

And it never hurts to copy me on bike issues.

FWIW I put in a new link category of what I think are the best web recourses for MD bike safety:
    http://www.baltimorespokes.org/links...or+bike+safety

In addition I would like to put in a reference for the Safe Bicycling in Maryland handbook but SHA does not have any info about it online. If you would like a free copy call Stephanie Yanovitz or Dottie Jenkins at 410-545-5656 for a copy.

NoRacer, thanks for the plug and Iíll note you can get a daily digest from the site by creating an account http://www.baltimorespokes.org/users.php?mode=new and please note that you can configure the daily digest to contain only topics of interest.

Poly liners do not work for me and I swear I am colder using them then not using them. I had a pair of silk liners that worked real well but I lost one. So if anyone spots a store that sells them let me know.

I saw that trade mark infringement. It made for a cute article on my site. Iíve been saving up all year for a Human Electric Hybrid Drive only to find out that new orders are temporarily suspended till further notice.
