You want air flow in these temps!! I would put up with some sweat for a commute. I stay warm on my way to the train but get chilled on the train so my second commute is colder. Maybe due to sweat. I'll change my socks on the train How are your injuries from the crash

I swear I'll get out tomorrow, when you work at home it's easy to just stay where it's warm, but the talk of mt. biking at the shop reminded me of what a good winter option that is, so may take a lunch ride over at Loch Raven tomorrow.

WABA is getting things together for the inauguration so I really should do that on Tuesday, and it would be good to get a century in for January.

Here's another picture taken at a stop sign at the intersection of King Ave and Gum Spring Rd:



The snow around White Marsh was starting to accumulate. When I crossed over to Ridge Rd, I found it nearly covered other than the trails made by cars. The same for Putty Hill, Walther Blvd, Fowler Ave, Hiss Ave, and Taylor Ave.

The snow stopped by the time I got to Hiss Ave and the wind started to pick up. By the time I got to Loch Raven, the roads were clear, except for a little dusting on the edges.

The snow was very lite when I rode out this morn'. I gotta say that today was warmer(if you can call it warm) than yesterday, by a few degrees.

Harry: If I didn't have to ride to work I would NOT be rec riding. These temps call for a warm fire and little glass of the Irish, so smooth.
Save the riding for Sunday as the temps are much warmer. Ride during the Ravens game and have the streets to yourself around Baltimore. Just make sure you are off of the road after the game.
Max: Hope the emergency isn't too serious.

Tomorrows equipment adjustment:
Mountaineering overmitts with Dachstein wool mittens underneath and thin poly gloves on my hands. Pulling out all of the stops. Also I have to wear the infamous 3rd sock. I cut the bottom off of a pair of old wool socks(hole in heel) and it makes a nice winter warmer for the boys
I was trying to find a dealer of these old school Austrian mittens but only found them in UK. I did find this post from a backpacker on a backpacking forum:
.....I know this because, as a Nordic Patroller at the '79 Pre-Olympics at Lake Placid, NY it was -40F the last day of competition. Back then I had gauntlet leather/nylon snowmobile mitten shells with Austrian Dachstein boiled wool mitten liners and us Army wool glove liners. I had to take off the Army glove liners B/C my hands were TOO HOT at -40F.......

Well, I have what I have--the stuff in the list I posted.

I can actually add wool/poly tights for the legs, but I'm more worried about hands and feet.

I might be able to add another pair of wool socks if I pull out the shoe inserts.

Hands are my biggest concern. I don't know if I have enough stuff for my hands.

I may need to take a drive out to REI, tonight.

If changing your socks helps your feet to stay warm then seriously think about sandals. It's not really air flow it's wicking moisture from your skin to an outer layer where it can evaporate without transferring the heat loss back to your body. Basically the same way you dress your upper body is the way the feet should be dressed IMHO. If you don't wear a windbreaker for a whole ride in this weather then you shouldn't be doing that to your feet. My two cents anyway.

As far as my injuries go my leg muscle still complains if I try to do much with it, which has brought on a new stage in my recovery, it wants to cramp because of the decrease in exertion. So it has become analogous of my personal relationships; damn if I do too much and damn if I do too little. Anyway it's driving me nuts being off the bike. I am able to go for a block's worth of walking right now, which is helping.

If you go there check out the PI lobster gloves(pricey). I did not like mine but they are the older style. PI came out with some different material on the outside. The earlier model(mine) was neither wind nor water proof as advertised. The newer model looks beefier. You can be the guinea pig.

I hear you on the sweat/wicking aspects of warmth. Perhaps a rubbery toe shield will do the trick. Prevents wind from penetrating in the toe box while allowing rear part of your foot to vent sweat. The toe shields I have seen do not look that sturdy in terms wind resistance. My take on a lot of bicycle winter/water gear is that it ain't all that great. I guess most cyclist do no trid ein extreme conditions. I'm finding better stuff through other sources(not bike specific). Most of the bicycle is gear towards tight fitting aero type clothing.

FWIW, My feet and hands were good today.

Glad to hear you are moving about. Not biking this week is not a bad thing.

So what defines a Fred? I've seen that term around the forums, once describing anybody who buys a Trek Madone as being a Fred or that every Fred will have one. Roadies can be quite elitist. I imagine it is anybody who is not skinny or kitted out properly, or otherwise dorky in appearance.

Charlie-I'm impressed. How does a kid from Walker Ave, in Baltimore, not exactly a winter wonderland, become a Nordic skier, patrolling at Lake Placid?

Good luck with your rides, I'm probably going to do another run and get on the trainer at some point.

That wasn't me. It was a post on another forum. I was just showing the warmth of the Dachstein mittens. I did teach handicap folks to ski at Mammoth mnt. in the late 70/80's. It was a lot of fun and really put life in perspective for me. I was not at the level of ski patroler for the Olympics. Maybe ski patrol for Liberty

FWIW In my pre-sandals days it felt like my toes were immersed in ice water and I originally thought it was wind chill, don't mistake moister heat conductivity with wind chill. A simple test is to take some news paper, fold it up to the width of your foot (2-3 sheets of thickness) and fold into a "sandwich" and slip it in between a pair socks (over your toes.) If that helps it's wind chill. If it comes out as paper "lint" you have a moisture problem.

We really need to put the pressure on GB where he is getting his stylish yet functional non-bike clothing.

Wow! The ride home was anti-climactic. I guess having the wind to my back made it so. Having sunshine helped, too, not for warmth but for the mental lift.

I may have been spotted by Lucasz and "Teacher" Bob on the way home--corner of Walther Blvd and Putty Hill/Rossville Blvd.
