I would say you should carry a lightweight tire under your seat or something for every ride that is far away and epic. You owe your wife a nice dinner or something.
I'm not sure what can be done when the bead breaks as you need two points on opposite sides of the tire that are holding in order for a boot to work. I'm still recovering from last time I road with you guys but sorry I missed a 20 mile down hill ride as a bicycle tow truck. :D
I just did an easy "short" 30 mile ride around the city today.

I thought I'd save something for Sunday's race team training, but it didn't work out that way.
I felt pretty good on the climb up Rt 77, so I pushed at threshold until lunch.
I ate what I could at lunch, but it wasn't that appealing--except the cookie that Mark Tabb offered. For some reason, that was very tasty.
After lunch, I had a few missed cues--Crystal Falls Dr, at Hilltop Rd, Confederate Ave, and Taneytown Rd. I finally got back on cue at Taneytown and Barlow Rd.
After lunch, I had a problem with my computer. The speed sensor wasn't working. All other sensors were fine (heart rate and cadence). Later on, at Camp Gettysburg Rd, I stopped to see if there was a problem with the magnet. Lo and behold, it had slid out toward the edge of the rim. I repositioned it back into it's proper location. The computer was restored to full functionality, but I missed several miles of the ride, so I used it for the mileage deltas, zeroing out after each cue.
With all of the missed cues, I had racked up 5 "bonus miles" by the end of the ride. And, I was later getting back to the ride start than I should have been.
I'm not sure if I'll make tomorrows training session. I know I won't be recovered.
Team BBC Training Ride

This ride was organized by CAT 3 teammate Mojo.
I still hadn't learned my lesson to not do a hard effort prior to a race or team training session. I rode, again, to failure. It took only 8 miles before I was off the back.
My first problem occurred when on a fast descent, I almost lost my cue sheet. Luckily, it pasted itself to my knee. Quick reaction was the only thing that kept me from dropping it completely. I wrestled with it for a little while finally stashing it in a jersey pocket, but in the meantime the others, were starting to pull away quickly and they weren't looking back. I was able to bridge back up, but I could feel that the legs were reaching empty quickly.
It was on the climb up Sand Hill Rd that I got gapped, then dropped. The legs felt like they did at the end of yesterday's century, I could only muster about 10 mph going up. The others were out of sight in about five minutes.
I continued on the route after retrieving my cue sheet from my pocket, but I wasn't moving very fast trying to read the rather small-ish font. I almost needed my reading glasses to make out the directions.
Finally, I decided to backtrack my way to the ride start. There was no point in me continuing while riding at a pedestrian pace (on the hills, quite literally).
Back at the school, I prepared to leave. I drew up a note thanking the guys for the Tour de Dayton and placed it on Eric's windshield under a wiper blade.
As, I started to pull out of the school, Mojo drove up. Apparently, he stopped at his brother's house (he lived just down the road) to get his car. The others were just minutes behind him.
He and I chatted for a few. I let him know that I wasn't discouraged too much about my lack of performance. I intend to make it back out for the next one. I'll be more prepared next time.
No big deal NR, I was thinking of having the wife bring her bike so I could "borrow" the rear wheel or tire and then drive me to whereever everyone was so I could jump back on, I can see it now "I drove all the way here just so you can fix your bike and go on????", she was cool about getting me though. I was going to limp back to the car, ya figure I already need new rims, bent back still have slight vibration.
I saw these whats better light weight or aero? Of course the goal is to be faster both up and down hills, right? not buying anytime soon maybe my birthday.

GB: Cirque report!!! I have seen some pixs on bikelist.org and think I saw your head (brown hat red stripe) listening attentively to a speaker. I didn't go down on Sunday because I helped the family clean out my parents basement. After seeing how people acquire toooooooo many things I decided not to be tempted in getting more bikes. I did take home my old Schwinn stingray from the 60's though. I plan to restore it. It has a 5 speed stick shift and rear slick tire! All original:thumb: Maybe not the tires and b-pads
The Coho and I had some nice adventures this weekend.
Ride out to Leesburg was a nice and quick 5hrs for a fairly hilly 71 miles. The most fun of the outbound route was a small rd called W. Old Baltimore rd. It meandered through dense wooded areas, then the surface turned to hard packed dirt, then I saw a road sign that said "FORD" which I took to mean the car. Since I drive a Chevy, I cruised right past. Then I got to this:

Off came the socks and shoes for an ankle-high crossing. Got to Leesburg by 11AM in enough time for a quick lunch and cool down. The Best Western hotel where the event is held allows all the bikes to get stored against any free standing object in the lobby and halls. When I first got there, I was looking for a place to lock up the bike outside and someone said, "what are you doing? just bring the bike into the lobby" Weird, but true- the inside of the hotel lobby and hallways to the conference rooms were strewn with snazzy vintage bikes of all eras. Very cool.
Talked to Charles the Coho builder. I met Dan Artley soon thereafter and discovered he'd just broken his collarbone from a fall during a morning group ride. :(
Seminars were fun for me, but my family were teasing me about how seminars about "period correct" restoration of racing bicycles couldn't possibly be construed as fun. I had lots of chillin' out time talking to the (other) rando bike snobs and checking out all the bikes. Sunday, I rode to the fairgrounds for the swap and show. Lots more chillin' and chatting. I noticed that Chuck and Christa and other DC Rand-ers showed up and talked to them for a bit. (mostly about possible coordinating of their rides and my BBC rides. hmm.. maybe so)
Headed back into Leesburg by 1pm, ate a veggie burrito and took off for B'more. After I took the ferry across the Potomac my troubles began. I had only cued my ride for the way out. For the way back, to save time, I used googlemaps return route. Whoa, did I get lost. And then I found my way back. And then I got lost again and then one more time. Finally, I got out my outbound directions and began reversing them which got me back to Baltimore environs. All my getting lost added an extra 22 miles + time asking for directions and stopping to look at maps. I got home at 9PM. 5hrs out and 7hrs back. Sheesh.
But the trip was super fun and even the getting lost part was not too bad because the weather was so nice. Good stuff. -GB
W. Old Baltimore Rd caught me off guard the first time I crossed it as well (in the winter time.) Amazing that we still have roads like that here. Congrats on getting un-lost, PIA while working things out but sure feels good to get home again (I know the feeling well.)

I may be doing this ride on Saturday. I've done it before, pretty area, only a metric but fits my fitness and schedule. Looks like I can't do Tour Dem Parks due to having to drop my Rowan off at a bday party then pickup.
Charlie-Thanks for the heads up on the bridge. From the satellite pics it looked like one of those flat possibly open grated models with a draw bridge in the middle. When I can get three or so days together I'm gonna do the ride to Point Lookout and back, not sure which route but will most likely be coming back up that way to get to Annapolis and the B&A.
Get this-I called this guy down in Virginia who is listed on the Adventure Cycling map as an alternate ferry across the bay from VA to Point Lookout in MD-$250.00. WHAT!!! That's the budget for the whole trip matey.
PS-I did 38 today out to Butler and back. I'm forever destined to be slow, just the way it is. Must be the length of my femurs.:) Still easier than running.

Anyone get caught in that storm last night? My train was late so I got to stand on an aluminum bench under a metal canopy keeping somewhat dry watching the lightening bolts. Always wondering whether one would strike our metal "protection". What was MARC thinking? When I finally arrived in Baltimore the weather storm had lessened so the ride was decent. I did blow a front spoke. Never lost a front one. I wonder if my wheels are beginning to tell me something:innocent: Naw, just fix it and ride.
I was out in Towson yesterday at a meeting about Cuda Rd and the thunder hit just as the meeting ended. I wandered over to Hudson Trail Outfitters (who now sells bikes!) to wait out the worst of it. So I made some new friends and had some interesting conversations.

TDP must have stumbled a bit this year. I never got any info about it- nothing mailed or emailed which is strange, after being a volunteer last year.
