Hi, I'm a new member, live in Hyattsville 6 miles outside of DC. Starting to fix up my vintage Bianchi and ride more.

I don't know many trails around here or anything about group rides etc. but if there are things going on I want to get into the scene.

Hi Snowgren. There sure are things going on here. Start digging.
Clubs: Baltimore Biking Club, Potomac Pedalers, Oxon Hill.
Web resources like Washington Area Bicycling Assn. (WABA).
You've got a great trail system through DC and surrounding counties.
For routes: check Bikely.com and mapmyride.com

Going on my first 25ish+ mile ride tomorrow, 57 mile ride across the eastern shore. Going to bring lots of water, nature valley bars, pump, tube + repair kit, sunglasses, my wits, tool mini-set, sun screen, maps... anything else vets have found useful in a crisis or for maximizing comfort? I'm using a combination of back roads with larger chunks of 404/Shore Hwy and 572/Atlanta Rd. If I had a camera I'd post pics after, maybe I'll get a disposable. In any case, I'll let you all know what the ride was like.

I'm looking for someone to post this on the BBC website (I'm locked out again):

The Bob Moore Memorial Moonlight Madness Bicycle Ride
Wednesday, Aug 25, 2010 (8:00 PM) at War Memorial Plaza
400 E. Fayette St, Baltimore, MD

Come ride with a tight pack of responsible cyclists. We'll tour Baltimore by moonlight and see the neon sites.

Nope. Janet needs to put the bong down. (or, maybe she needs to pick one up)
The BWI ride was last month. I likely won't have another official ramble till Point to Point, Oct 10th.

BTW Harry, You still thinking about riding the Indian Head century down in So.MD? It's the sun after CWC.

I am thinking of doing Indian Head, the day after CWC. I have to decide whether to just ride right there from the CWC, but it's the drive home in traffic that's a killer. You thinking bout doing it?

RANT ALERT
Facebook is great for personal chatter between old friends and other ephemeral information. My biggest gripe with Faceboook is that it is often used it as a hub of important information. For this, it is terrible.
Why? Because it is "information in" and not "information out". There are so many other open forums for information- information that is viewable and searchable by anyone for any reason at any time. (bikeforums, baltbikeclub forum, blogs, webpages, etc) Facebook? Not searchable. Think about it. All of the stuff that's exclusively on Facebook now: all the pictures and stories and helpful information can't be found with an online search. And never will be. Much of it can't even be seen without having friended the person whose page it is. So how do you know what's there? You don't. And because Facebook is all personal pages, that won't change.

Teresa had an old friend die suddenly last year. He was a big facebook fiend and a very popular person, but all of the information concerning his death and all of the info regarding the memorial service was in facebook as an un-viewable personal page. Bummer. -GB

Awesome. Reno Monument--I grew up a few miles from there. Geaslin drive. I used to ride my bike up that road all the time.

Also - for any Baltimore riders, I'm thinking of riding from Fells Point to Parkville tonight. I've never done this.

I was thinking of going:

Washington Street to Harford

Hop on Harford for a few feet then take Hillen/Perring parkway for about 2.5 miles till I can get on Woodbourne.

From there it looks like I could take a few backroad routes to get to Oakleigh and just take that up to where I'm going.

Anyone have any comments on this?

Barry, I am not going to let you turn yourself into my father!!!!! LOL!

None of us have any friends!!! [No, we have FOLLOWERS! LOL!]

I like finding interesting bike stuff on Twitter since it's more "realtime", then posting that stuff on my Facebook wall. I don't really care about giving -my- status all that much.

Ok... I figured out how to add "media" to the map, so if you want to see pictures taken where they occurred, see the map.

Anyone done this ride in the past few years? I'm wondering if it's hilly, how the support is, what kind or turnout to expect, etc. A cue sheet would be great too.

What: 8th Annual Harford County Pink Ribbon Ride
Where: Harford Community College, Bel Air Maryland
When: September 18, 2010

My wife and I are signed up for the Seagull Metric Century and it will be her first ride over 35 miles (first Seagull too). I wanted her to do something like 40 miles before October and this Pink Ribbon Ride is near her parents (good for kid sitting that day).

@psuaero - I haven't done the Pink Ribbon ride, but I believe many of the female persuasion in the BBC bike club have. I'm not sure if you can establish a free account or not, but the website: http://www.baltobikeclub.org has a forum. Hope she enjoys the Seagull. It's as flat as you can get around these parts... but there's going to be a lot of people out there.

I have abandoned BiM Active completely. They have sold out to Adidas (miCoach). They plan to NOT support "live tracking" anymore, so they hold -zero- appeal for me. There are other GPS websites that do everything else much better than BiM. "Live Tracking" was their only shining feature.

The blog, in it's current state, will remain online until BiM takes a wrecking ball to it, as well. In the meantime, I've switched over to Trimble Outdoors.

Now, if I can only get a handle on why this app does some of the things that it does.
