Papa Tom... I assume you're concerned about the narrow and dangerous bike paths. The one that scares me is the Mill Basin drawbridge path. It is narrow and even with the wooden flooring, I get a little spooked with the fingers of the two sections bouncing around in the middle.

I just learned something that is surprising. Have you noticed that they put traffic lights and drawbridge gates up near the Paerdegat Basin Bridge several years ago. I secretly suspected that the contractor put them in the wrong spot, instead of at the Mill Basin Bridge. The Times had an explanation of this several years ago, which didn't convince me.

In looking it up again, I found another explanation for the gates, which is equally strange.

It's in this article, that I just became aware of plans to replace 7 of the Belt Parkway bridges, including Mill Basin, Paerdegat Basin and the Gerittsen Beach overpass. Interestingly, the new Mill Basin Bridge will not be a drawbridge.

The following article reports that the cost of replacing these bridges will be $500 million.

    Narrow is not the problem.
The ramp to the GW is narrower than that with cyclists coming and going.
When i cross the bridges you mention, I'm more concerned with all the broken glass that's up there.

What's the current status of the PB bike path condition/availability?

I rode the entire length from Sheepshead Bay to Howard Beach back in July. The section from Erskine St to the end was not officially open, but there didn't seem to be any reason not to ride it. There was a fence at the end that you could walk around in the grass (or ride on an MTB). If they really didn't want people to use it they should have blocked off both ends.

Hey, I know this is an old thread, but since I just did a Google search on the Belt Parkway Bike Path and found this topic (and discovered this forum), I decided to join the forum and post here. The path is really nice now. I rode from Flatbush Avenue to Cross Bay, and they did a beautiful job on all the broken road construction and Sandy damage at least on that section. Smooth riding all the way, and I didn't even notice a lot of seashells or glass.

I am going to ride the path from Flatbush and west to Knapp Street to see if they bothered to fix the horrifying 1/4 mile stretch adjacent to Plumb Beach yet. As far as I know they haven't, but I haven't ridden on the Belt since last year so maybe they have. Anyone know before I bother with this?

Also, I need to ride the stretch from Ceasar's Bay (Bay Parkway) past the Verazzano into Bay Ridge. There were some really bad patches after Sandy, I believe, most of which were close to Ceasar's Bay. Hopefully they repaired those as well. Anyone know about this?

One comment I have which is kind of cool (assuming you fellow Brooklynites don't already know) is that they appear to have redone the path going from the Marine Parkway Bridge to the Belt Parkway. I used to always ride Flatbush avenue on the big sidewalk on the southbound side that we shared with pedestrians going from Kings Plaza to the Marine Parkway Bridge, but there is a beautiful path on the northbound side of Flatbush connecting the bridge to the Belt Parkway nicely. I found this on the return trip of my ride, which was basically a circle going from Flatbush to Crossbay, then South on Crossbay, then West on Beach Channel, through Riis Park, then over the Marine Parkway and down Flatbush to complete the circle.

Anyway, great forum. Sorry about the long post, but as I said, I found the forum through Google and figured I would jump right in.

    Edit:
Oops! Sorry, folks! The value of scanning the forum first BEFORE posting a new thread or bumping one that is seventy five years old. If I had, I would have found the other more current topic on this. My bad.

    Welcome, Chiro.

We all tend to start new threads before browsing the older ones, so don't beat yourself up too much. I guess the info never really feels up-to-date until you've asked the questions and gotten the answers yourself.

There are people on this forum who ride the Belt Bikeway all the time, so you should be able to get the info you need pretty easily and fairly quickly. If you like riding bikeways, check out my website -- http://nyrides.freehosting.net -- for a pretty complete list of all the good ones in our area.

Dude, thanks, clicking on it right now and shall peruse! Speaking of which, anyone else here excited about the Geenway that has been going on for several years now? Hmmm Now I am wondering if your site has some more info on that as the last time I rode on it (about two years ago, so it was more like riding on "parts" of it) it was fragmented. I am off this Tuesday, so I may have to go and see how much of it I can ride on now.

Papa Tom, I read your Brooklyn page and the first thing that stuck out in my mind was that I agree with you about your road-paths linking up the legs of the Belt Parkway paths as well as the end of the Bay Ridge path into Manhattan. I have done variations of this route many times. I live in Bergen Beach, near Kings Plaza, which is a hop-skip-jump away from the Flatbush Avenue entrance to the Belt. When I do the ride you describe, I get on the Belt, get off at Knapp, near the UA, then I take Emmons to Neptune, and more often than not, just for kicks, I will take Ocean Parkway, which becomes Surf Avenue, into Coney Island. Then I go all the way to Sea Gate, make a right and take usually Mermaid down to Cropsey, where I then pick up your path to the Belt.

I have never gone through the park as you suggested, coming off the Bay Ridge leg of the Belt Parkway path (I will next time I do this ride, though, thanks for the tip!) but I have done 3rd all the way to Hamilton, then Clinton, then Tillary, then onto the Brooklyn Bridge, etc.

    Nice site you got there!

It's a little outdated (including the Belt Parkway ride), but many people still use it as a starting point for those types of bike paths. I first put it together in the mid 1990's, and some of the pages have not been updated since then. Always double-check with the people on this site before you head out to do any of those rides, as I haven't returned to some in a number of years and they may have changed!

    Cool thanks.

Speaking of checking with people on the site, any word on progress on the Greenway set to run between Brooklyn and Queens?
