stillwell....

just did it today for the first time. It was really good. Had a lot of fun!
First time through i got a little lost. Second time through I took the short easy route by accident.
3rd time was a charm, took the whole length of the "more difficult part. Real nice, beautiful day too.

The Stillwell trail is probably the best on LI from a technical standpoint, especially if you ride a rigid SS like me The hills aren't huge, but some are plenty steep and filled with enough rocks and roots to keep it challenging. Some would argue that its not very technical and while that is generally true, the real challenge is getting through it fast. However, in the spring and summer the trail tends to get loose and sandy due to all the traffic. You should try it in the colder months, especially when the sandy soil is frozen..your tires grip like nothing else and its much faster...like riding on sand paper. I like to do about three hard laps and then hit the Greenbelt trail.
Lately I've been heading east to Rocky Point. While not as technical (mostly), its smoother, longer, has a really great flow to it and it tends not to get as torn up by all the warm-weather traffic...a real blast!

Close to the city is Sprain. A little farther away is Blue Mountain. Check HERE for information.

I've been there and paid the price. The "slick" rock threw me for a tumble. I went with a group who had been there before, which was a good idea, they just knew where to go. It was definitely worthwhile. Enjoy.
