I'll do both, but probably not the 145 in both rides.

I'm masochistic enough to do both, but what's the difference between the two rides anyway?

Not much. Glen used to organize the ride for the 5BBC. They accused him of stealing, was proven someone else did, he said screw it he's doing his own rides and started this one up which is the ride he organized for years. The 5BBC one is their fund raiser so they took the blueprint and ran with it. There may be some differences in the route but I doubt anything major.

Far as I know, the Montauk Century, organized by 5BBC, won't have a 30 mile route. Families and people who like to tote their dogs along might prefer Glen's Ride to Montauk.

There was someone on the 5BBC who did that all the way from Penn Station to Montauk - unbelievable! Then again if I had a dog and family I'd be really tempted to do the same

I think return transportation was only about $10, when I did the 5BBC ride in 2005. Last year. maybe $15. Express check-in was free.

5BBC version: It's earlier in the season, so chances are the weather will be a bit cooler. It's an insanely popular century, so it can be crowded on the shorter routes. The 100-145 seemed pretty manageable.
Glen's Ride to Montauk: It's a new ride so it's alot less crowded than the 5BBC version. It's also a couple of weeks later, so the weather is a bit warmer. Glen seems pretty obsessive about adding lots of little touches to keep riders happy... The routes are very similar. Glen added a couple of little detours to shake things up. I think he promised more route changes this coming year...
I rode and enjoyed both rides, but for me Glen's ride was a bit better. His staffers were very friendly and helpful. I'm sure it was a financial hardship for him, but I really liked the small feel of the ride. It's what I imagined the Montauk Century was like 10 years ago.

I know a bunch of folks who have done the Penn Station to Montauk. They noted that ride through the city is very rough. I'm not big on riding in LI so I start at Babylon when I did it 2 years ago. I prefer my native NJ. I'm working on a Ride from Cranbury to Tuckerton (about 150 miles). There is nothing wrong with the ride (the stops were very good) I just like my rides better. ;-)

But I still can't believe the guy had a 130 lb golden retriever in a trailer all the way - and were going faster than us!

I did the Penn to Montauk route twice last year and didn't think it was particularly rough. Then again, I bike commute & ride in the city all the time... It probably IS rough if you're used to riding well-paved suburban streets... I did manage to get a nice cut in my sidewall somewhere along the way... Didn't notice the cut or the tube bulging out until I got back home at the end of the day.

Do you have to use their transportation situation. Can I just register and pay, get dropped off at the start and then picked up at the finish?

As long as you're getting dropped off/picked up - yes. You won't be able to bring your bike on the train.

I would love to ride the century, but check in is insanely early (3:45 - 4:30 AM). I would need to get up around 3 to do that.
On the other hand, I can sleep in and check in at 5:30 and do the 140 miler.

I'm probably in for the 5BBC ride. Really enjoyed Glen's last summer, but won't be around that weekend this time.
Who else is doing the 145?

Even though I haven't ridden in AGES, I think I might be back in shape to do Glen's ride, the 145mi, in a "reasonable" time. Last time it took like, 9 or 10 hours on my fixed gear, which is insane. Hopefully on my road bike I can haul in a more respectable 7 hrs or so.
I plan on leaving the car there this time, staying there overnight with my gf (she's gonna attempt the ride too) and check out light house and stuff, come back the next day.

Jeez, everyones coming out of the woodworks in this thread!! I should be available to do both, and will most likely push for the full monty 145 mile run. However, this is pending that I do not find anything more fun and less work those two days. Can't really say what bike I will be riding, as I have none at this moment, just a Sram group and Fulcrum wheels, but no frame. That reminds me, It makes me think about your Titus build, Tim. Any chance that may rolling soon?
