Hey, I'm making plans early. I want to do the Green mountain Stage Race on the last weekend of August. I am travelling with my Girlfriend and would like to be prepa`red with some accommodation before I go up. I know it's nine months away, but I have some free time to research it. I would like a reasonable rate. I `don't mind if it's a holiday inn or somewhere, as long as the price is right.
Any help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

You might look into the Waterbury area. It's a bit less than half-way between Waitsfield and Burlington. It has several B&B's (The Old Stagecaoch, in town) and a Best Western (?, may have changed names, just north of town). Not sure about the Waitsfield area but Burlington has a wide range of options. If you decide on Waterbury, The Alchemist has a wonderful Donovan's Red. Just guessing from your moniker....

Little River state campground is nice. It had one of the nicest showers and bathrooms that I've seen in a public campground... Stayed at a leanto there when we hiked all the 4000fts in VT in one 3-day weekend back in August...

There's also some kayaking in the reservoir that you can do now that it's open for boating again.

Gosh Jay, you just stirred up a lotta memories for me. I grew up in Burlington and for vacation my Mom would take us to the Little River campgrounds. That was back in the 60's. My Mom was very industrious. She was a single parent with 4 kids and no car. So she would get someone to take us out and drop us off and then comeback in a week. I haven't been up there in years, I have lived near Pittsburgh since 1979, but I usually get home about once a year. My brother lives near Waterbury, in fact I'm sure it's a Best Western on Rt. 100 heading towards Stowe just north of Waterbury.

It's a very nice campground, I mean it's probably one of the nicest state run campgrounds I've been to in the northeast. Much nicer than the ones I have been to in NY state anyway.

The shame is when i was there this past summer, we didn't have time to go to Ben & Jerrys which is literally like 10 minutes drive from the campground. although we drove past it on the way to Stowe to hike Mansfield.

Thanks a lot guys. The information is really helpful. I may borrow a trailer tent and use the campground, or the best western is probably as budget as you can get without a tent.

warren and waitsfield is usually a zoo during the road race and the prologue - due to all the folks needing to come and go. if you want to stay right at the heart of it i'd book early. i'd imagine that they would fill whatever accommodations are available there quickly.

if you want to camp little river would be a good spot. not sure when reservations open. its probably a popular spot. (was there snowshoeing last weekend...)

richmond and waterbury would be good. on the other side of the mountains is bristol - you'd have to drive over app gap to get to the rr start. there might be stuff available at sugarbush resort too, summer rates and all.

check out the green mountain bicycle club - there's an elist for them as well - might put you in touch with folks who know more about the race and local accommodations.
