Calling all NE NYers and West VTers...

I'm looking for a good route leaving Port Kent NY, into Adirondack park. Anyone ride around there?

Port Kent is in the Park. Where are you planning to go? What criteria for route selection?

Ideally 40-60 miles of paved, low traffic, and scenic roads. Hilly, but not 10k feet of climbing.

Port Kent to AuSable Chasm on rte 373 is about the only option initially. Traffic should be light after the ferry rush leaves. From the Chasm you could take rte. 9 to Keeseville then rte. 22 to Wadams. There is a back road from Wadams to Elizabethtown, then you can take rte. 9 back to the Chasm to get back to the ferry.

For a longer ride you might consider going N from the Chasm and connecting to Harkness on the Arthur Rd., then to Wilmington via Hazelton Rd. and Lake Placid on rte 86. From Placid use rte. 73 to Keene and 9N to Keeseville and 9 to the Chasm.

Or you could ride up to Plattsburgh and come back on the Grand Isle ferry and back down to Burlington. I did the Chasm ride back in the 60's when I was a paperboy in Burlington. I think it was on my old 3 speed from Pennys. Beautiful area. Will be riding up there this summer when I'm on vacation. Live near Pittsburgh now.
Good luck.

Great to read about this. I will also be visiting the area, specifically Essex, NY and plan on riding up to Ausable Chasm and other places. Last time I was there it seemed there were lots of options, and as long as you ride North - South, the climbing isn't too tough?

We take the Essex ferry almost every year when we go up and back on vacation. You can actually go west from Essex on reasonably flat roads, there are some hills but not any 3 milers. Of course I've been driving them for years, it's funny how you remember them alot better when you have to ride a bike on them lol. Any way, beautiful country.

Route 9 south of Elizabethtown is a good biking road, too. Go south for as long as you want. I have also biked the southern section as far as Warrensburgh and then returned via the Schroo River Rd.

Route 9N out of Ausable Forks will lead you to the mountains. You can go on to Jay, pick up 86 and head to Lake Placid. Now you are on the Ironman course. There are lots of options out there.

Have fun.

This link will give you several options with maps to download in pdf for the greater Lake Champlain region on both sides of the lake. Enjoy!
